+50 Appreciating mass destruction weapons as a science marvels is weird. amirite?

It's a nice hobby. I don't mind. I just see an a-bomb as a thing which took lives of mostly innocent people. It's a marvellous engineering achievement Anyway for me there are just 2 possibilities with nuclear weapon - it won't be used anymore in the future or it will possibly destroy whole cities, countries, maybe even the whole planet.

Bomber aircraft dropping incendiary devices took way more lives during WWII than the two atomic bombs.

The science behind those homes is amazing and can is a starting point for many other advancements. The fact that it was used for such a horrible unforgivable act doesn't make it any less important as a scientific marvel. It should be acknowledged what it did, and how horrible it was, but the technology and science behind it shouldn't be disregarded, even in a casual interest way, because if it.

It 100% matters how you approach your interest in it. If you are into it BECAUSE it killed a bunch of people, yeah, that's kinda gross and insensitive. If you're into is DESPITE, and you don't ignore the fact, and process it, I get it.

"America's favorite childish retort..." Nobody talks about the moon anymore unless it's debating whether or not we actually went there.

It's a bit different. Nuclear weapon is mostly designed to flat out huge amounts of land. It's not a beautiful F-22 dropping a bomb on military base of foreign country - it's something to destroy this military base and the whole city nearby (off course we can discuss tactical vs. mass destruction bombs but we saw only this 2nd way of use in the past). Nuclear weapon is something which has 2 possible paths in the future: 1) it will not be used anymore 2) it will cause a war which will destroy cities, maybe countries or large part of the planet

You're rather proving my point here. You're (selectively) attaching a very emotionally charged force to the nuke. An F-22 is also a weapon of war. However the F-22 has not played a large part in ushering in the longest period the earth has ever seen without large-scale state on state conflict. By owning nuclear weapons that have the ultimate deterrent effect nobody has meaningfully attacked nuclear powers, nor have they attacked each other (directly). The existence of nuclear weapons has potentially saved more lives on the earth in the past eighty years than they took from the unfortunate Japanese. Advanced nuclear energy is also a potential freedom from reliance on fossil fuels and potentially the key to interplanetary exploration.

Why American guy appreciating mass destruction weapon created by his country is a person with nice hobby and German guy appreciating V2 rocket is a weirdo? I mean, aside from the fact that there are tons of people of all nationalities that have a fascination with any and all weapons of war without people thinking too much of it, there's the fact that the Germans were aggressors and the US was not...

Two things: 1: We're talking about a specific bomb, not the concept generally. 2: Comparing a weapon used to end a war that was started against someone to a gas made to genocide the Jews is wild.

wait until you find out religion has killed over 500,000,000 people.
