+68 It's not all in the mind; if mental strength can help overcome physical challenges, then physical problems must have equally debilitating effects on the mind. amirite?

So you just reverse the words and it has the opposite meaning? That's so danemun!

If A then B implies if not B then not A. So 'if mental strength means you overcome physical challenges' implies 'if you dont overcome physical challenges then you don't have (sufficient) mental strength'. Not exactly what op said (effects) but it's close enough

This was very cool

As a general logical statement you're absolutely right. But in this case, there is no reason to believe that the mind-body connection is not symmetric (or reflexive, if you prefer). There's no valve that makes one influence the other, but not the reverse.

Unfortunately the burden of proof is on you as the OP. In this case, there is no reason to believe I'm not 6'8" with a 0.5" long dick. Neither is true though.

Ok. Consider the term 'hangry' - a physical state (hunger) creates a mental reaction (anger). Irritable bowel syndrome can make a person irritated in the emotional sense. Chronic pain can make people irritable, short-tempered, and hard to be with. I could go on...

Anyone who has physical disabilities can tell you what a detrimental effect they have on mental health.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Yes, and yet people without disabilities keep up the 'its all in the mind' stuff.

Ever met someone in constant pain? However nice they might be otherwise, they're often short tempered. Ever hear the phrase, "You're not you when you're hungry"? Pretty sure sickness makes you mentally weak as well.

Well, yeah. There is more and more research on the gut microbiome affecting one's cognitive capacity, so there's that

Well, It actually works like that. If I understood your phrase right, for example breaking One of your leg Will let you limping not only until you heal, but even After because your brain could still believe there Is a problem and learn a pattern to walk without hurting

by jaquan16 2 days ago

This is true, I'm pointing out that the reverse can happen just as well, i.e. physical difficulties can negatively alter the mental state. I don't know enough to speculate if it actually alters the wiring of the brain though.

The body/mind impact is clearly visible in a woman's menstrual cycle. Many of us can predict our mental struggles by charting the physical symptoms.
