Donating isn't that much better than throwing away, amirite?

I do everything I can to avoid participating in fast fashion at all. It's practically impossible if you don't have a wardrobe of pre fast fashion clothing. Also, look up gaslighting and get back to me. A one time opinion statement is not gaslighting lol

i donate to the womens shelter, for women who have nothing after leaving their abusers.

I do that with officewear because they help women to learn career skills and help with work placement. So work clothes are always in need.

Don't donate to goodwill. Donate the small thrift stores, homeless shelters, woman's shelters, etc.

I shop at my local goodwill. They are different region to region. Our prices are very low compared to other thrift stores. It's very clean and they hire people who have various challenges finding employment and help them with education to pivot into other careers. Thats the charity part of the organization. They sell donated items as a way to raise funds.

There's unpopular opinions and then there's just straight up misinformation.

I completely agree that it is often misused to justify overconsumption, when a lot of it does end up in the landfill. I worked at a thrift and we would bale literal tons worth of clothing. We are consuming at a rate much faster than is being used second-hand. With that being said I do think donating for even potential second use is still better than throwing straight into the garbage, and you have the option to donate to a charity that isn't a thrift store. I don't consider a thrift store "charity".

Yea, guys!!! Let's just throw everything away! Screw donating to potentially help a person in need!!!

Most donated things are thrown away. If you want to donate - donate money or give your stuff to someone you know directly.

TBH, I kinda get your point about the mega charity disguises and the global waste, but tossing stuff out ain't the solution man. Maybe the key isn't ceasing to donate but smarter consumption - buy less, and when you do, go for quality, not quantity. +1 on local donations though, they really help our neighbors out. So, not all donation is pointless, just gotta donate smarter.

I was brought up to think that nobody even knows what cotton is in Africa, so for all I know you can allow a garment to be more used. Transport costs? I mean... How bad can an extra container be on a cargo ship?

I fail to see how this could be an unpopular opinion. I completely agree.
