+71 Traveling far by plane for less than 3 months is pure consumerism, amirite?

by Some-Ask 2 days ago

I have only 4 weeks of paid vacation at my job. I barely have enough money to stay in Japan for 2 weeks. I'm going there in the next month. I am pretty sure that my situation is not that unique. And you telling me that unless I can stay for at least 2-3 months I am privileged consumerist. I want to go there, and probably in other places later in my life. And these "short" travels are the only way I can do i it. And again, I am pretty sure I am not the only one with conditions like that.

Maybe it is an issue of country I live in, but nobody has two months for travel per year, if they have an office job. Most people have something like 7 weeks, but they also want to visit parents during Christmas etc.

Not only that, but most countries do not provide visa free travel for more than 90 consecutive days, if that.

Thanks for the laugh early so early in the morning, this point of view is so misguided and off the mark it's funny

Oh, so travel is even more of a rich people thing. Joy...

"just make the seating area first class, the poors can sit in the luggage area" OP eventually, probably. probably supports those standing seats too.

I think the vision needs to look forward, how do we make this energy efficient or green? We need progress, humans will not give up air travel.

It's not necessary to feel happy but even shorter stays broaden your view on the world. I've been to Kenya a couple of years ago, visited people in the bush, visited people in Mombasas slums. It's a whole different world, and actually talking to those people changed my view on the world. This was one of the experiences in my life that made me really grow as a person. And as that person I can tell you: this take is objectively wrong. Sorry.

Yeah this is not an unpopular opinion, just a bad take. If I can't stay for 2-3 months to learn the culture I am destroying the planet by travelling with an airplane. How am I meant to travel for a week long holiday? Drive there? Maybe run? 🤣 I think you are using the word privileged quite loosely here. Yes I am privileged to be able to afford a holiday, but no, i am not privileged to travel away for 3 months. the reason people disagree with you is not because this is an unpopular opinion but it's because it's just a bad opinion

What job allows you 3 months paid leave?? This isn't an unpopular opinion, this is just dumb

I wonder what us immigrants must do… You sound very privileged with your 3 months nature immersion holidays.

We are all different and we all do different stuff when we have time off. A person that likes travelling usually cannot get a 3 months holiday from their workplace, so they will go for 2 weeks instead. That makes sense.

Are you saying that the carbon footprint is too high and so only the absolutely richest should have the ability to travel overseas? Because there will inevitably have to be some people traveling for a who bunch of practical reasons.

Let me ask you a question: do you consume meat? Are we not supposed to talk about this because it's culture and "normal" to do so? I can easily take a plane trip every now and then by the massive amount of CO2 that I save by eating completely plant based.

Counter: We need significantly lower carbon plane flights. This means electric planes and more efficient technologies. Slowing down investment means slower technological innovation. The latest studies suggest that peak pollution happens at the zenith of industrialisation. The most advanced civlisations are starting to reduce per capita pollution. We need more economic growth, not less.
