+78 Most games now are WAY too long, amirite?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I think consuming videos on Youtube and Tiktok has changed the viewing habits of many people. Short bursts of entertainment bleeding into expectations in other forms of entertainment.

by This_Sir_9470 2 days ago

Agreed. Older movies were so long sometimes they'd have intermissions. Personally I like epic games like Red Dead. If you do all the side quests you could spend months or years on that game.

Except the expectation for games is that they be long, for some reason. Usually at the detriment of the pacing and overall quality. Games in general have mostly been getting longer on average. I don't think getting bored of padding has anything to do with attention span.

the last game i completed 100% was spiderman 2 on ps5, before that i can't even remember the story of a game i've finished bc i find them all way too long

Wow, developers listen to those who game frequently as opposed to those who do so casually, colour me surprised. This is like being shocked that a local bar changes what's on tap based on their regulars opinions as opposed to the drifters that come and go.

Some of my favourite games are long but one thing about long games is it's pretty much a guarantee I'm not gonna buy your DLC. Not because it isn't great but because even on a game I love, I'm not generally looking to add 20-30 hours onto my playthrough if it's already 70 hours.

You could also just play as long as it is fun for you, close the game, go touch some grass and come back another day to continue. It's the "I have to finish this now" mentality

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Nope, I do what you say even with shorter games, I try not to rush anything I don't have that need to finish this now mentality

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Tbh I agree. Most games you've got to put a good few hours in before you start to get anything back. Great if you have the time but I just want to load up, shoot some badies and go to bed sometimes

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I hate when some games end up feeling like a job

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Hahaha, I hear you, but I want them to be hard enough that the payoff of winning is satisfying. If I could just own the whole world in an hour, that's too easy.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I sort of agree with this point. Something like a flight simulator you probably wont play unless you've got a lot of time on your hands, but sometimes you're in the mood for that. That's your plan for the day / night. Other times, yes you just want to blow some stuff up for 20-30 minutes.

yeah, i tried to be thorough during the first two acts but when i got to act 3 my mind was so bored with the side stuff but soooo wanted to know what happens next i rushed the main quests.

I don't think any game should be 80 dollars, agree with you about the assassins creed games, the worst part is even tho I've played some of them I can barely recall what I did in them because they all repeat the same tasks so many times

by Anonymous 2 days ago

You might be right but when I was young it took me wayyyy longer than 40 hours to complete games 😭 ocarina of time, Mario 64, pokemon blue, gta sa all took me years to complete. I honestly like games like kcd now that let me take my time like I did back then. (I also love playing games like rimworld, x4, city skylines that really don't have a limit on playtime if you aren't aiming for the end)

As a warthunder player, what is a sleep schedule?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Depends on the kind of game. I expect a JRPG to be around 40 hours, if not higher. A fighting game story should be relatively short if it has one. An action game can be closer to the middle as long as the gameplay stays interesting.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

that does not mean the game is too long or too boring, it means its not the game for you. I put 290+ hours when FFX came out (on PS2), I replayed FFI on NES at least 5 times with different parties, but I put about 50 on FFX-2, barely finishing it. Other people woul have a different experience.

by Virgiegrimes 2 days ago

Possibly, but there seems to be a hella lot of games not for me then. I've played so many games last few years where I get about 10hrs in and just burn out on it. Honestly, I think it's just age mate. Been gaming for like 30yrs. I've seen everything there is to see. So it really has to be mind blowing to hook me in. Either that or it has to get my brain ticking over something fierce.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I mostly agree. But i think its mostly about what the game does with all those hours than how many hours there are.

by Feeling_Corner 2 days ago

Yeah, I want a long ass game, especially a game where I don't have to depend on online features and having to buy from a store to keep enjoying the game. Keep your 10 hr games

by karinalindgren 2 days ago

You are turning a games value into mathematics instead of artistic merits

by Anonymous 2 days ago

And you have 160 hour games with 160 hours of fun too. There's plenty for everyone. Why complain about what others enjoy?

by Similar-Tap 2 days ago

I'm not I'm stating my opinion just like you are, why do I need to explain this? People can obviously enjoy whatever they want

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I don't think they are way too long. I think quite a few are stretched out with bs.

Yerp, 40 hours of good characters, interesting characters & learning mechanics is PEAK, 40 hours of collect bumble caps so you can craft bee components so you can increase your grappling bee so you can scale the cliff is mega TROUGH

90$ games today are cheaper than 60$ games in the 90s, gaming is actually a really cheap hobby
