+118 Why do we call them "home fries?" I have never in my life had home fries at home, only restaurants. They should call them "restaurant fries.", amirite?

Yeah I'm really confused tbh. I live in Atlantic Canada, and here "home fries" are cubed breakfast hash browns. Deep fried or grilled, doesn't matter.

Why don't they make the whole plane out of the black box?

Speaking of planes, what is up with airline food?

Home fries are called that because they are cut in a way that doesn't require specific technique. You just chop some potatoes into pieces and cook them in a pan. Restaurants may fry them, but that's not necessarily what they are. They were actually a pretty big staple in many states I lived in throughout the Midwest, made at home. The cafes I worked for added them to the menu because people kept asking for them.

Your anecdotal evidence is biased and inaccurate. Fried potato slices are a very common home made dish, especially for breakfast.

Restaurant fries are square cut because they have a machine to cut them. Home fries are wedges or diced because that's easy to do with a knife at home.

I make fries at home all the time, so do several people in my family. Pretty common, not hard to cut a potato and cook it.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

‘Home fries' are specifically diced potatoes, not cut into batons like traditional French fries.

Twice cooked fries should be called restaurant fries because who has the time to do that at home? some people do

by Budget_Excitement 2 days ago

At my home we make them fries but we call them restaurant fries.

Have you ever had "rustic" cut chunks of potatoes or ever eaten potatoes at home that weren't mashed?

by Roger18 2 days ago

You don't make irregularly cut pan-fried potatoes at your home... but you do make uniformly cut potatoes fried in oil at your home, more often than you have them in a restaurant?

Why do we call them "French fries?" I have never in my life had fries in France, only restaurants in the US. They should call them "US fries".

by alenelehner 2 days ago

Because the widely accepted names of foods aren't solely decided by your personal experience

Because Americans are weird. "Chicken fried steak," Do you say potato boiled carrots? No you say boiled carrots. Do you say chicken roasted potatoes? no you say roast potatoes Just because you also fry chicken that way doesnt make it chicken fried steak it makes it fried steak

I have them at home all the time. I'm more confused by why anyone would pay restaurant prices for such a basic dish.

by Mosciskidaija 2 days ago

Because when I'm not home, it's not convenient to carry a frying pan, burner, oil, and potato.

by TackleBrief 2 days ago

That's fair, but if I'm spending money, I can't help but not want to spend $15 on 10c worth of potatoes and $1 of labour when I can spend it on something I don't eat all the time. You do you though

Tell me you only eat prepackaged food without telling me you only eat prepackaged food.

I'd say at home you don't generally cut up potatoes into the "fry" shape and deep fry them, thats way more effort. Fried potatoes at home are usually rings, slices, cubes, or such; With wedges being the "home fries" shape, and the less "deep fried" feel to them,,, its exactly reminiscent of the fried potatoes I've had at home (whether mine, my parents, friends, etc!). Simply cut potatoes covered in a few spices and fried on a frying-pan So I'm curious how your family (if at all) fried potatoes?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

We never deep fired anything growing up or in my own family, and we cook every day. There's no takeout or delivery here.

by Legal_Promotion6768 2 days ago

A) I've never heard of them called home fries. B) I often make fries at home, either out of a frozen bag or by hand.

They are named for the people who aren't lazy and cook at home more than eat out lol.
