That's the thing. The punishment should match the crime and therefore that teacher should never see the light of day again.

You could in principle have a record for some kinds of crimes, like child molestation, but not others like say shoplifting. I mean you wouldn't need to know who dined and dashed for instance in order to know who molested children.

I do believe that a system should be in place, with which those who have demonstrated their rehabilitation in society can have their records expunged. However, some types of crime are situational, severe, and have high recidivism rates. As an example, if someone has committed crimes against children, I think it is a reasonable safeguard that they should be permanently barred from positions of trust involving children. Their crimes will have lifelong effects on their victims, and bearing the lifelong consequences of their action seems just to me.

Use paragraphs breaks if you expect anybody to read that

I'd probably agree with this if it was only for non-violent crimes and the offender hasn't reoffended for a while after. But criminal records and background checks serve a purpose. You don't want someone with a history of child abuse working with children. Employers wouldn't want someone guilty of armed robbery handling their cash registers. Or someone with a history of domestic abuse working as a social worker.

Sadly, most prisons in the world AREN'T actually rehabilitative and recidivism rates are stupid high. Only a handful of countries do it right. So, for most countries, that criminal record is still necessary for policing.

Wow, a truly unpopular opinion. No, it needs to be tracked so that punishments can escalate for repeat offenses.

Most people don't need to be told not to commit crimes. Just because the government wants to rehabilitate you, doesn't mean I want to know you or give you a chance at a successful life.
