+51 Youtube music is better than Apple music / Spotify, amirite?

I think the interface isn't great, especially on Apple CarPlay. But… it comes included with YouTube Premium, so here I am.

Agreed, in the car it regularly freezes, gets stuck looping the same few songs, even if I'm playing from my downloads that has hundreds. Album art gets out of sync. And doesn't remember the playlist i was listening to last time. Volume and sound quality is in consistent Like many Google apps, they just don't seem to actually use them in the real world and make a useable product.

youtube musics' quality is absolutely awful. these indy artists aren't paying any licensing fees to the record labels so aren't on other platforms

by Anonymous 11 hours ago

Indeed. And those "licensing fees" are really cheap and aren't upfront fees anyway. If you want to release a cover on Spotify, you only have to sign over 20% of the royalties to go to the original artists. So from an indie perspective, it costs nothing. No reason for serious artists to not put their music out on real streaming services.

I see a lot of people use it too... I've had Premium almost since the beginning. Just not taking advantage of the music I would use it more for acoustic covers, live performances where I don't care about the quality so much

Spotify has recommended artists to me with 100s of monthly listeners.

I recommend reading the MBW report about Spotify fake artist investigation. In short, Spotify generate generic music to mix in your playlist so they can pay less to artist per hour of use, probably these have less followers in your case

Well of course they do, how can you expect a streaming company to survive on $18 billion a year revenue. Do you have some example bands that generated, I'm curious what they sound like.

by trompnorma 9 hours ago

I don't have a specific example because I don't follow these kinds of bands, but what they basically did was pay mediocre artists to create insignificant music based on a set of rules that depend on the genre. These songs are now owned by Spotify (through a shell company which make it sketchy) so they don't have to pay royalties. There are also speculations that they've started to incorporate AI-generated music, but I'm unsure of the scale of that. Of course, they don't openly admit to doing it

It's a good back up to have in case you miss a payment or something. I know if you wait too long to pay Apple Music they will remove your entire library. I know I'm always going to have YT Prem so it's good to know that it's another bonus to that.

100% its so much better, dont know why people still love spotify so much

You're underselling how bad the YouTube Music app is. It's far and away the biggest reason why I had to drop YTM, completely overshadowing all the pros of it.
