+30 I would rather my (western european) country suffer economic decline than sacrifice its culture through immigration-based growth, amirite?

How do you want to pay for the care of the elderly then? Because that obviously gets more expensive the more there are, and the young generation is the one making the money to pay for it.

With lower economic development comes lower standard of living. For the elderly too? No more nursing homes, nana is living with you forever.

by Theresiathiel 3 hours ago

That's simply not an option now like it was when households could survive on a single income. If the elderly relative needs real care (which they will for longer and longer as life expectancy increases, dragging out the later years) they will need to be in a care home or a house with an available adult.

It's a fatally reductive take to say that lower economic outcomes = zero nursing homes

by Certain_Release_8274 3 hours ago

It is a fact though that a decline of economic output means you'll have to sacrifice on certain luxuries and services.

GDP is not GDP per Capita...

by AvailableMountain451 2 hours ago

How is this relevant? Yes rich people will always be able to afford luxuries but for the average person economic decline means they get paid less and they can afford less.

by Anonymous 2 hours ago

Agreed. I'd sacrifice those luxuries if it meant cultural replacement were minimised

by Certain_Release_8274 2 hours ago

Social security which includes nursing homes is one of the first things that declines when the economy slows down.

by Anonymous 2 hours ago

It just means that there will be fewer nursing homes so unless there is government intervention those nursing homes will be able to price out the growing lower income classes. If the government does set regulations on pricing then once they fill up everyone is out of luck or they may implement a lottery system.

Will there be a period of adjustment and resistance? Of course, with change there always is. Is it better than being cared for by a human? No. Will it happen though? To some extent, I believe absolutely (unless we destroy ourselves before this technology becomes viable). For one, falling birth rates and increasing costs will create a situation where people have no choice. Those that want human care will still be able to get it, they'll just need to pay more.

Higher taxes on rich

by Serious-Bullfrog 1 hour ago

Pay well for care staff. AI. Encourage immigrants with nursing experience who can speak English. Provide bonuses to people who care for elderly relatives at home.

by Anonymous 1 hour ago

Well first increase tax on billionaires. No more intervention in forigen wars after Ukraine ends. And the money we save from not housing unnecessary large number of immigrants. Reduce military budget.

You've answered your own question there

by Certain_Release_8274 46 minutes ago

Economic collapse is very possible, it's not just a lower standard of living. Food lines, starvation and war are likley outcomes.

by Puzzleheaded_Ask 43 minutes ago

We are struggling to pay for elderly care as is. Do you really think that we can sustain it? We will have worse levels of care, for more people, funded by less money.

by RelationshipLegal 40 minutes ago

You don't. Elderly people better have built social networks (families) to support them or massed enough wealth to pay someone to take care of them

It's ironic really, most British say this and yet the ex-pats (British have a fancy word, rather than call themselves migrants) in Spain have pretty much cornered off a little part of it for themselves and do absolutely nothing to integrate with the Spanish. In fact, they expect the Spanish to adapt to them.

by Roman38 9 minutes ago

Which is essentially the biggest criticism I have with mass migration), it enables people to live in parallel societies. But if you are in Rome,..
