Conspiracy theories are actually good. amirite?
by zaneheaney9 hours ago
The problem with conspiracy theories is that they disconnect people from those around them and make them very easy to manipulate - you can make a conspiracy theorist believe whatever you want as long as you convince them it's secret knowledge and stroke their ego. They have a lot of the same downsides as cults.

Things that make you feel better aren't necessarily good for you in the long term. Heroin for example.

I mean, they certainly are entertaining. When they don't harm or incite harm toward others, they certainly pass the time in the same way a Wiki doom spiral or Netflix binge might. I don't think the position you're taking, which is to say, 'many conspiracy theories are harmless entertainment', isn't too unpopular. Unfortunately, I feel like we live in a timeline where the most prominent ones are a net negative for society now.

Well I just think conspiracy theories are as good as they are true. And well a lot of them turn out to be true. A rather suspiciously high amount. It's almost like the people that have been running the world into the ground have something to hide. Weird right?

It might be good for an individual, kinda. But it's terrible for society for a bunch of people to be convinced that their nonsense is true and meaningful. Unpopular, sure.

It's better to actually focus on real efforts to seek control or belonging to make the world less spooky than falling into delusions.

What you described is just shared delusion. And that's never good.

Conspiracy theories help simple people make sense of a complex world. It allows them to distill every complicated situation down to a simple us vs them to narrative that they can digest and accept without having to actually understand what's really going on.
