Anti Intellectualism isn't a big problem. amirite?
by Anonymous7 hours ago
The absolutely terrifying political landscape in the west is a direct result of anti intellectualism. I can't imagine a less accurate time in the last century to make this assertion.
by Anonymous6 hours ago
There are people who literally think vaccines are poison due anti intellectualism, in the west. It is clearly a large and real issue.

Seriously, we like 3 months from rounding up people with glasses ffs

This is what I been saying at this rate of how HHS is, rampant science disinformation, and attacks on education. It's bad. Play ☠️
by aureliocassin6 hours ago
It's bad and so many folks don't fully grasp or seem to care how bad it is, which makes it exponentially worse.
by berniehowell6 hours ago
I value critical thinking I don't value critical thinking Okay.
by Anonymous6 hours ago
When did I say that? Did you critically think about what I said?
by Anonymous6 hours ago
It's one thing to analyze the cultural, philosophical, and religious inspirations of a media. It's another to act like it's some great political or philosophical work and criticizing others for not feeling that way and calling them anti intellectual when what you're talking about isn't even a high level intellectual thing. A lot of Star Wars' morality is pretty surface level so acting like Star Wars should be a call to action for everyone is pretentious.

IRL? maybe, but the internet is a huge can of worms and it's only getting nastier.

I don't like the term anti-intellectualism at all. I'm educated and have read enough things to follow a lot of things and I'm pretty well read on arguments that I disagree with. Defense of anti-intellectualism is more like a conclusion I came to after a lot of years and less of my default starting position. I relate this to MLM scams. That's obviously just one example but I think my defense of anti-intellectual takes the same form. Someone who wants to sign you up for an MLM usually preys on the fact that you'll engage with them. The person will outmaneuver you and you won't be able to refute that you can sell a garage full of vitamins so you buy.... But then you have a garage full of vitamins and you embarrass yourself on FB to get rid of them. I think there's a lot of case like this where you can't refute someone, but it doesn't seem right and you should walk away. That person is likely to call you an anti-intellectual. Usually they'll be trying to sell you an ideology that you don't want and don't need.

Yeah my problem is with the people who erroneously espouse said term. Not when the term is rightfully applied
by Anonymous5 hours ago
Yeah, I agree with your OP. I just chose a very non-controversial example
by Material-File5 hours ago
Only an anti-intellectual person would say that.

Anti-intellectualism is refusing to listen to people with expertise, and distrusting the scientific method. Accepting anti-intellectualism means accepting climate change denial, vaccine "skepticism", flat-eath, young Earth creationism... Basically anything categorically wrong that people want to believe so they don't have to act in the best interest of others.
by Anonymous4 hours ago
Yes it's just a lot of people imply any criticism of pretentiousness is anti intellectualism which is false. I do agree with your point though. Those are all anti intellectual causes

Were you in a coma during the pandemic or something?
by Anonymous4 hours ago
I cannot disagree with this take more. I stayed in the US south for some time and they and I saw it first hand. The place I was at freaking defunded their schools to the point the local schools all closed and they used federal funds to bus the students to another area. It seemed so bewildering to me

This feels like you put something about anti-intellectualism in Chat GPT and it spewed out this nonsense. This is Pseudo-intellectualism at its utmost. It is opinions like this that allow the Right to push for the destruction of education and enlightenment for the masses.
by Glad-Box4 hours ago
Nah if I put it into ChatGPT it would put some basic tame politically correct thing.
by Anonymous4 hours ago
It ain't that easy. The same way believing the earth is flat won't kill you, it'll make things easier to believe whatever other thing that can be directly harmful to you or others around you. As I say, and I think someone else did before me, "No one is guilty for what the feel or think, just for what they do". If you think or believe whatever nonsense, I don't really care much, but if you start taking action on this nonsense and spread it among other people I will tell you how wrong is it and how it's not correct Anti Intellectualism MAYBE it's not a problem by itself but it is one of the main causes of many other problems

Well put
by Anonymous3 hours ago
People are dying precisely because of this
by Anonymous3 hours ago
The ladder is uncommon and the former is the person's choice.
by Anonymous2 hours ago
The former includes politicians with anti-science and anti-medicine platforms. Those are not the choice of all their constituents. Likewise, an infant does not get to choose if its parent vaccinates it
by baron502 hours ago
RFK and most mainstream Republicans are pro vaccine. They're just anti Fauci. RFK isn't a Republican but you know what I mean.
