Drivers should not be allowed to drive through parking spots. amirite?
by Anonymous9 hours ago
i can't imagine how many accidents this has caused or almost caused The answer is "fewer than backing out of a space"
by Anonymous9 hours ago
Yea I've literally never heard of an accident happening like this. I park like this a lot. I've heard of a lot of accidents involving people reversing

& it's private property no a road
by Anonymous8 hours ago
Safer then backing out when two HUGE trucks on each side of you. Just go REALLY slow and make sure it's 100% clear.
by Anonymous8 hours ago
It's technically not allowed Show your work. AFAIK it's not illegal.
by Anonymous7 hours ago
We're talking about private property and I'm pretty sure there are few, if any, laws that govern parking on private property.
by Working_Patient_53737 hours ago
The only traffic/parking laws I know of in private parking lots are regarding the fire zone and handicap parking.
by Anonymous7 hours ago
It's technically not allowed as the parking spot is a solid line...but it's obviously never enforced Untrue. They are not road lines, they are parking lines. Otherwise you couldn't pull into a parking square either I can't imagine how many how many accidents this has caused or almost caused While not zero, less than reversing out of parking spots

I would imagine there are more accidents from backing out in a busy lot

this is some 3am deep unhinged thinking
by Anonymous6 hours ago
Truly an unpopular (and somewhat unhinged) opinion
by Anonymous5 hours ago
TF?! I would argue that trying to back out of a tight spot causes way more accidents than pulling through then pulling out.

Sometimes even opinions can be wrong, often when they're based on incorrect facts for example, like yours is. Most common accidents are when backing out of a parking spot. Driving forward is always the safer option. Also driving over parking lines in a parking lot is not illegal.
by SubstantialTower75885 hours ago
AAA says pull-through parking is the safest option. Lol
by Anonymous5 hours ago
This is one of the first unpopular opinions ive seen... But also, for anyone in a large vehicle backing out is way dangerous so when i had a truck i backed into a spot or pulled through.

I am a mailman. We are trained to pull through parking spots whwnever possible because it is safer than backing out. If we can't pull through, we are to back into parking spots.
by Anonymous4 hours ago
You will eventually get in an accident if you cut corners and do unexpected things.
by Anonymous4 hours ago
Boooooo
by Anonymous3 hours ago
This is actually a standard and commonly taught defensive driving technique, you always pull through when able to. It lessens accidents. Not increases them.

It's not a public road, it's a parking lot. The solid lines don't mean you're not allowed to cross them. They're just parking space demarcations, nothing more. Pulling out of a parking space head first is much safer than backing out, as you're not having to blindly back into an open space where vehicles drive and people walk. You know that in some countries (like Japan), backing into parking spaces is the norm for this very reason? Also, as a former semi truck driver, I can tell you that 99% of truck drivers either back into or pull through parking spaces for this reason. The other 1% are lazy or idiots and not thinking ahead. In a truck, the dangerous effect of backing out blind is highly elevated due to the length of the vehicle and the swing of the trailer. But it applies to passenger vehicles as well.

A solid white line is not a marking you are prohibited from crossing anyway. You're not even technically right

This was the only thing I was docked points for on my very first driver's test when I was 14, so I've avoided doing it again my whole life. I don't think it's illegal anywhere, but it's bad driving. It can create a congested situation in a crowded lot when others are trying to pull into that spot. It's the driving equivalent of trying to enter an elevator before others have exited.

1: it's not a road, it's a parking lot 2: crossing a single white line is legal in all 50 states

Backing is generally less safe because it's much harder to see when most of your body is facing the wrong way with most of the vehicle moving in your line of sight and the need to turn your head all the way around to look the other direction. Pull through parking avoids backing in a parking lot altogether. It sounds like OP was whipping into a space with limited visibility and almost collided with someone pulling through.

You preach about rules with a rigid obsession, Ignoring the practical, real-world progression. That "solid line" rule, from a bureaucratic mind, Doesn't mean it's the logic that we should all find. If the spot is wide open, the path is all clear, Then driving straight through is efficient, not fear. It can be far safer than backing out blind, With kids and cars flying, all hard to find. So loosen your grip on the rulebook's cold page, And consider the wisdom that comes with some age. This isn't the hill that your pride should die on, Let's focus on actual danger, and move right along.

Almost got t-boned today in a parking lot cause some idiot decided to pull through a spot and basically make a u-turn in the aisle to go in the direction of the flow of traffic for the angled spot he pulled out of. It's even worse at Walmart because then they pull out and go the wrong way down the aisle.
by Anonymous1 hour ago
I do it when I can because my blind spot is literally completely blind. My back windshield is three feet by around a foot and a half. It doesn't matter if I turn my head or use the side mirrors there is a spot I can't see. I have hit someone twice due to it because they were in that blind spot. It's worse when a truck parks next to me. I did not choose this car (convertible), it was a gift from my mother. She didn't want the car anymore. It is safer for me, and others, to pull through.
by Anonymous1 hour ago
I drive through all the time. Of course always careful when I do so.
by PuzzleheadedFee1 hour ago
You're driving at like 2mph when you do this. It's way more than enough time to brake if someone is coming.
