That's the thing. I'm not saying good singers shouldn't sing, but they usually choose boring songs that kill the vibe. I feel like there are plenty of great songs that would let them show off their skills while still being fun and well-known to the crowd.

exactly, and I sing it very well so sometimes it's not just singers trying to show off. I do Freddy Mercury proud every time and for the most part people usually sing along.

Even if you wanted to implement a rule like that, how would that work realistically? You'd have to basically hold a mini vocal audition before anyone could get up on stage. I think that would kill the vibe even more lol. There will always be someone who is better at something than someone else. That's just a fact of life. Instead of focusing on that, just enjoy/embrace the music. Karaoke is a fun, but also different experience for everyone. Approach it with perspective. Might end up having even more fun than expected.

I think I worded my last message badly. I'm not saying good singers shouldn't sing, but most of them tend to choose super boring songs just to show off their vocal power. I feel like anyone who gets on stage has a bit of a responsibility to make the experience great for everyone there. Someone here mentioned singing Bohemian Rhapsody, and that's an excellent example. It's a great song that's fun, most people know it, and it still lets them show off their vocal range

Well, I think i sing well, my friends say I do but I do enjoy karaoke but I don't go up there and sing Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey. I stick to small songs like Creep by Radiohead or What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction aha, I haven't experienced a karaoke night where someone was a really really good singer, so maybe it is annoying. I'm not sure

It's not that it makes me feel insecure , it's that they kill the vibe and make the karaoke boring. I want to clarify that I'm not talking about all good singers, just the ones who deliberately choose boring, very niche songs specifically to show off their vocal skills without reading the room, they forget they're in a bar and people just want to have fun.

I sing in a band, I never try my hardest at karaoke. I let whoever I'm with pick the songs and I genuinely try to make any song they make me sing funny. I agree with your sentiment, karaoke is more for goofing around than actually trying to nail a song
