+20 I don't care what my coworkers make, and I won't discuss wages with them, amirite?

Ok boss

Everyone is free to do it with each other. Just not with me

by ramon11 3 hours ago

So you'd rather be ignorant and blissful.

Nothing to do with ignorance. I know exactly how much I want and expect to earn in my role. If I take on more responsibilities and my knowledge broadens then I will request a raise. If I don't get it I will apply for a different job What someone else is earning is none of my business

by ramon11 3 hours ago

You'd rather be ignorant about competing salaries so they don't challenge your wanted and expected salary.

by External_Act 3 hours ago

To me its just simply none of your business what I earn. And you could be earning more money that me. I applaud your negotiating skills if you are. I have zero issue if other people want to discuss theirs with each other

by ramon11 2 hours ago

There's like zero conflict here. I personally agree with the principles of the people you're talking about. Does that mean that I always compare notes with everyone at work? Nope. So...just do you?

I received a lot of conflict from co workers in 2 different companies when I refused to tell them what I was earning. If someone wants some information that you are holding and you refuse to give it to them then it can cause conflict

by ramon11 2 hours ago

Bullying people over their personal information isn't cool, and is also a secondary issue imo. I view wage transparency as a permission structure, not as a hard requirement.

by Anonymous 2 hours ago

I wouldn't say I was bullied but it certainly made me unpopular

The idea being if everyone knows there's a pay disparity, especially for the same position doing the same work. People can know they're being underpaid. It's about having more information and a stronger position when negotiating that pay. It benefits only the employer for their employees to not know, they can get away with paying less. In your case even if you're happy with your pay, wouldn't you want more information to know if you're actually being paid a fair salary for your position at your company? Why wouldn't you want a stronger place to negotiate from?

by Spirited_Group_1823 1 hour ago

I don't need this information because I am being paid what I negotiated during my interview and I also know what the industry average wage is. If I am not happy with my pay and I think I deserve more then I will calculate what a reasonable pay rise should be and give my employer the reasons for why I should be granted this. If he refuses then I will simply apply for jobs in other companies that match my wage expectations. My leverage for a pay rise is my skills and knowledge, its irrelevant to me what co workers make whether its more or less.

by ramon11 1 hour ago

I see the benefits for people who do it for sure. But I simply don't care who is making more or less than me and I can't pretend that I do. My system of negotiating a pay rise every year and moving companies for this wage if refused works great

by ramon11 1 hour ago

Not really. The problem is most people are simply too scared to ask for a pay rise and then apply for other jobs if they don't get it. Like Rocky said "if you know what your worth then go and get what you're worth" Level up your skills and demand more

Found the manager who likes sending emails about company policy that forbids people from discussing their salaries.

I have zero issues with people discussing wages with each other. More power to you.

It's another data point to possibly use in your favor. If say someone else in the same position and other similar factors is being paid significantly more, that's something to use. It's a reason to state to your employer why you are asking for a higher pay, to know if you're being paid fairly for your company. It's information to leave on the table without any reason beyond you simply don't want to use it.
