There was no honour in the fighting - I think you have watched too many Hollywood Movies. Plus, as a bonus, if you lost, you were very likely to be massacred, along with most of the citizen's in your home city (though the fit & healthy might be sold into slavery). The cities were then usually razed to the ground and fields salted to prevent anything growing for a long time. War back then was a very high stakes affair because you were literally fighting for the lives of your family.
