If this is a genuine question, the answer is they were expected to break the rules. Part of the idea of the club was, "Let's break social norms and be macho mans", and for that to happen they implemented rules that would make a club like theirs inaccessible if the members didn't break it. It was like another step in their ritual of initiation.

I haven't seen the movie but if someone did start talking about it to me directly I would probably just say the line (knowing that it is slightly annoying) and move the conversation on as I don't have anything to say about it.
