As someone who used to have to clean public bathrooms I can tell you the main reason for these is that people don't flush way more often than you think. Also they wash their hands even less than that. In short, people are gross.

Just throwing it out there that if an automatic toilet doesn't flush, just wave your hand in front of the sensor. Or hold your hand in front of it for a few seconds and move it

As a plumber i want to point out that ALOT of the people who install these do not calibrate them properly and opt for factory settings. They work perfectly fine if they are set up properly and maintained as per instruction manual

I think it's a pretty popular opinion. These things are miscalibrated or just simply malfunction frequently. They don't flush when they should and you have to touch and mess with it trying to figure out the manual button. Or they flush too soon when you're still sitting there, splashing you with Poseidon's kiss. the worst are the soap and towel dispensers. You wave your hands like a maniac and nothing happens. The batteries die on them frequently and nobody replaces them. These are all problems that never happened before technology came to the rescue.
