+63 I don't like confessional booths, therapists, or psychologists. Truth and Strength can only be found within yourself. Everyone has different answers. amirite?

You really need therapy.

What makes you think I am sane? Is it my reasonable suggestion?

by cliftonwillms 5 days ago

I already told you I am not interested. You tried to shame me. That hurts when I am exposing myself. You could have used gentler words to express yourself. You could have said Gosh you really need friends in a compassionate manner. You could have said something like I hope you feel better somehow.

How convenient that to the person saying it this is always applicable to virtually anyone, and any pushback receives a "you're just proving my point". I don't need to pay $300 an hour for a friend, thanks.

Is it possible that its applicable to virtually everyone because of how reliably it works? Imagine telling someone "drink some water" if they mention that they are thirsty. What a wild suggestion.

When you're thirsty and drink water, you don't need water anymore. When does the therapist tell you they don't want your money anymore, you're cured? What a terrible analogy, lmao.

Don't think of therapy as a cure, think of therapy as training. Eventually you learn that your always going to get thirsty, and how to get water for yourself before going off the rails.

Your therapist isn't your friend. If your therapist tells you they are your friend, you need to find a better therapist. They can be friendly, but that isn't the same.

Once again, if they didn't charge hundreds of dollars per session you might have a point. It's not inherently a waste of time, it's more often than not a waste of money. "Sounds like you need therapy", so they can send you the invoice then?

by Anonymous 5 days ago

If it worked would you consider it a waste of money?

Sounds like you are in denial about your own mental health and think you can power through it.

Y'all better than me. I am not reading this essay for free lol.

Cognitive bias, the malleability of human memory and our own tendency towards self-deception prove that "inside ourselves" is probably one of the worst places to find objective truth. I don't know about you, but for myself, and every other human to ever exist, we're incredibly bad at seeing our own errors. You're being incredibly absolutist as it is, which is going to make truth even more elusive.

This is intense. I hope you find the inner strength you're looking for.

I think there are some people who likely really need therapy and medication but I am becoming more and more convinced that there is a "cult of therapy" for lack of a better way to describe it. It seems that a growing number of people get an identity from therapy and their mental health conditions, and they don't seem to show any real progress from their treatment. They're caught up in a form of narcissistic self indulgence where their feelings matter more than everything else. Realistically, if more than a small percentage of people have serious mental health problems that need regular therapy or medication it is time to reevaluate our assumptions about how we evaluate mental health. Either we're experiencing a significant mental health crisis or the entire concept of having a mental health condition may be so broad they're pathologizing healthy people. If we're having a mental health crisis we should track down the source, otherwise we should treat people as if their problems are based on something more tangible and real.
