Halloween costumes are a waste of resources and unsustainable, amirite?
by Anonymous6 days ago
Same with every seasonal celebration, huge amounts of unnecessary waste.

Yeah, I'm sure Christmas is way worse when it comes to creating waste.

Kinda true but Halloween is actually fun for those who can put costumes together themselves rather than buy them, although buying them from seamers might be a better idea waste-wise. I agree it's wasteful from the pov of cheap candies and pumpkins going bad though, but they're great party and carving excuse. Thing is, art is born of having a bit of excess materials to fool around with. Excess leaves, excess glue, excess paint, excess paper, excess wood, excess fruit, etc. xD

Well you don't HAVE to throw things away just because they're "disposable". I've never understand this halloween argument... it's not like plastic spiders and skulls will rot. As for kids costumes, yeah they outgrow them. Like they outgrow clothes and shoes. Every year our halloween is better because of everything we have from previous years.... and some things are really versatile: chains, capes, spats

As someone who grew up in the 1970s with a mom who made most clothes herself; absolutely agree. But the reality is also, how many current parents can and want to make the time?

That's the crux of use and throw culture for a lot of things. Since Halloween is once a year I think some effort should be made

Look at the price of a ready made costume on shein or temu and then go to a fabric and craft store, I totally understand busy parents choosing to buy a cheap costume that they'll grow out of instead of putting more money and hours into making one
