+73 If a video game is not fully cross-platform at launch it does not deserve to win game of the year. amirite?

by priceanthony 2 days ago

What or who even determines what platforms they need to be in? What about iOS, Android, Linux or Mac, what about VR exclusive games? Hell even if a game is on any OS on PC it doesn't guarantee you'll be able to play it because you might need a better rig.

there is an "official" goty though, just like movies win awards that aren't oscars or emmys all the time, even though those are the two most widely recognized as legit.

by ashtonwalker 2 days ago

Is there tho? I know the Game Awards is what everyone focuses on but that has no more legitimacy to me than IGN or Gamespot's pick. Especially when most people are only tuning in for the reveals, because it's more of a diet E3 than an actual award show.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

What's the official one? Edge magazines?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

What makes it the official one? It's only just over a decade old

by Anonymous 2 days ago

The games industry tries real hard to get people to take the game advertisements seriously.

by Kilbackardith 2 days ago

I don't understand. Balon D'Or has always been a major goal in football manager. How did the game awards become important other than it being a platform for announcements?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

That's what I came here to say; GA is just a pay2play industry circlejerk and nothing more.

Why would Sony or Microsoft or Nintendo make a game that would play on their competitors' hardware...?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

If everything was just available on every platform, then consoles would lose their identity. There would also be objectively a "best" console, because people would just buy the one that is the most powerful (or the cheapest if they can't afford it.) The exclusive titles are literally what makes a console relevant. Like who would buy a Sony or Nintendo console if you could just get their games anywhere? I don't know how OP doesn't get this.

Steam machine go burrrr

If GTA VI doesn't run on my Atari 2600, I'm going to burn down the rockstar offices.

by Quincy82 2 days ago

All games require that you buy an expensive console.

by zoey59 2 days ago

OP was born with a switch in their Tummy TeleTubby-style.

by Quincy82 2 days ago

You're not really entitled to play a game to begin with. Seems like the next logical step to this argument would be that GOTY should only be for free to play games. GOTY is a silly honor in general so it doesn't really matter to begin with.

by Fair_Childhood_7905 2 days ago

Why should singleplayer-, hyper competitive- or mobile games be cross-platform?

by Rathantonio 2 days ago

That's cross-play.

by Hefty_Department 2 days ago

Ahh fair enough

by Quincy82 2 days ago

Platform should be totally relevant to GotY. In fact a cross-platform game is under severe limitations compared to an exclusive

by CharacterAlone798 2 days ago

That's so arbitrary lmao.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

No game should be allowed to come out on any other platform before PC. Because PC is the master race and objectively superior.

by okeyrunolfsdott 2 days ago

What a bizarre take. "Game of the Year" means it was the best game released that year—not the most accessible or affordable.

by Hungry_Gap 2 days ago

Just get a job

by Anonymous 2 days ago

How fully cross-platform? Should it work on Windows XP? On android? On raspberry pi custom console? On previous generation of XBox? Maybe on Symbian phone, while we are at it?

by jeanettebalistr 2 days ago

Alright OP, which game is coming out next year that you don't want to see lose against the inevitable GOTY that is GTA VI?

by Fluid-Bluejay5364 2 days ago

GOTY to you is all that matters.

by Limp_Composer_8880 2 days ago

I don't see how what platform(s) you can play the game on has any bearing at all to the quality of the game.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Well to be entirely fair they would also have to be playable on mobile since that's the most popular gaming platform by far. Also a game should need to downgrade to weaker hardware is also implied by this. Probably not a good idea

by InterestSuitable 2 days ago

silly

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Because it doesn't matter if only ten people can play it, if it's the best game released that year, it's the best game that's released that year. Pretty simple.

by Serenaspencer 2 days ago

So Skyrim will win GOTY this year?

by Evening-Equipment812 2 days ago

This isn't even unpopular it's just moon man think

by Zoe39 2 days ago

What if the art is better than your rule?

by Subject-Arachnid 2 days ago

iPads don't count buddy

by seamuskuhlman 2 days ago

I think this opinion is more dumb than unpopular, nice try though

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Switch user mad

by Mysterious-Test3320 2 days ago

Sounds like this came from a place of jealously. Like you were annoyed because you didn't own the platform that had a previous GOTY.

by mandy31 2 days ago

So as of right now a game needs to release on PC, Mac, PS5, XBox Series, Switch 2, iOS and Android to deserve to win? Or are there other platforms a game needs to also release on? That's going to be a very short list of games.

by PerfectBlacksmith557 2 days ago

Who decides which platforms are included? Is it OK if Nintendo get's left out because they have a lower power system (prior to Swtich 2 being released for sure, and even now, maybe). What's truly cross platform in terms of computers? Does that have to include Linux and Mac support? What about games that require a keyboard and mouse. Sure you might be able to play them on consoles. I think most consoles support this now, but the vast majority of console users aren't going to do that. So a game that has a control scheme that can only work with mouse and keyboard cannot be a candidate for GOTY, regardless of how good it is? And for mouse and keyboard, I'm not even talking about first person shooters. More games like real time strategy and such where there's a lot of scrolling around the map and clicking on various icons and units all over the place. This type of mechanic just doesn't work well with gamepads.

>How can a game that requires you to buy an expensive console or pc to play it alone be called game of the year Because it was the best game that came out that year

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Yes we should all strive for the least common denominator in everything we do…

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Heavily disagree with this, pressure to make everything cross-platform is what's made this generation of consoles a disappointment in my view. A console should be about serving up unique gaming experiences that you can't get anywhere else, not just a dumbed down mid-tier PC.

by schinnerroslyn 2 days ago

I won't accept a GOTY that isn't fully cross-platform at launch Okay ... and now? Crying in the corner?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

We look past that if it's an amazing title

by Anonymous 2 days ago

If you are a real gamer, you have all the platforms so why care.
