So how do you see that working? They send pigeons out to find lost hikers? How do the pigeons know it's a lost hiker and not just some random person? Or how does the pigeon then get the location of the lost hiker back to the rescue folks?

You put a GPS tracker on the bird with an SOS button for the lost person to push when the bird finds them.

While I think they would work, I personally think they would interfere with the drones that are used now. And I think cost-effectivness ratio is way higer for drones as they can use tech like thermal cameras to detect people extremely quickly. And with how far these drones have gotten technologically it's pretty easy and relatively cheap to buy and setup a swarm that can scan an entire mountain side in minutes.
