Age verification laws aren't necessarily bad, governments are just implementing them poorly. amirite?

Ok, but that's worse. You do see how that's worse, right?

Shifting it to the government doesn't remove the risk - it just creates one massive central database. Instead of scattered leaks from a hundred companies one breach would compromise everyone at once.

I think this is something at makes sense. I'm not sure of how it would affect security as an attack vector, but I think it makes much more sense to independently verify your identification with the government (who already has your identity) and then they send the affirmation that you've been verified than it does to have each website try to verify your age/ID. The older I get and the more we advance, the more I see that there's just so much out there that people shouldn't have unfettered access to, especially children. I do think more parents should be aware of internet safety and take precautions and teach their children, but I also believe there should be systems in place that prevent access entirely without ID/verification in certain instances.

Tell that to Elon Musk and his giant database of PII that he got from the government. Also, centralizing the identification makes the privacy concerns worse, not better. Instead of 20 companies being able to tie what you do, buy, and say on their platforms to you as a person, the government (and anyone they gave/sold that information to) would be able to track everything you do, buy, and say everywhere online.

That sounds like such a pain in the ass.

You really don't see the issue here or how it can be abused?
