People go to college for the degree, not to learn, amirite?
by Anonymous3 days ago
Not remotely unpopular, and barely an "opinion." If you just want to learn, there are plenty of free resources to do so. If you want proof that you have learned something, you need a degree or certification - which is why you go to a college.

If thats the argument, why not have standardized testing at a fraction of the cost while providing the same certificate? The vast majority of time spent in college is attending classes and lectures, while the time out of class is spent proving you learned something from said classes and lectures.

As a lawyer, we absolutely did learn something. I learned how to think like a lawyer. I can explain what the rule against perpetuities is... or at least I could in my 1L year before I brain dumped it. I know cute words and phrases like arguendo, habeas corpus, and officious intermeddler and can wield them in conversation like a sword. How to actually practice law? Na fam. Law School doesn't teach that. You're on your own with that part.

People go to college for the job

doctor here I went to college to learn. I wanted to be a doctor, im (STILL!) interested in my career field 17 years after entering it. I went BACK to School AFTER medical school to get my PhD in Immunology, I loved it so much. did nothing at all for my career as im already an immunologist, I just legitimately enjoy learning about the human immune system. my patients might think im a little weird when I get excited explaining why they have migraines for 3 months out of the year, but they definitely love me when I get them their meds and solve their problems

Ooh, I'm excited to hear why some people get migraines for 3 months a year and how it's related to immunology. I don't suffer from this or know anyone who does but interested in learning the reasons - feel free to go technical as happy to read papers too. Also, I love to hear people geeking out about things they're interested in.

They aren't mutually exclusive

Uhh, same could be said of high school. You get out of it what you put into it.

That's an aspect of life to a point, honestly.

People go to work for the money, not for the experience.

I disagreeā¦I genuinely enjoy learning but at the same time sometimes given how stressful our situations can be and how overworked sometimes my time is better used at home going over stuff that is more crucial and/or just as learnable at home as it is in person. Sounds like an old timer not aware of changing times

Wait until you hear why people get jobs

I used to go for just the paper but once I discovered computer science I fell in love and learned and studied like a fiend so it's all dependent on your situation
by Anonymous2 days ago
Mostly true, but it depends on the degree. If they are on med school, I hope they are learning something. But yes, most degrees are just to say you have a degree.

If you don't learn, then you fail the class. And you don't get the degree. My friend teaches anatomy and physiology and a good 30% of her students fail every semester. Some have taken the class three times and are still failing. Going to college just for the degree, while being either unable or unwilling to learn anything doesn't work.

Business majors go for the degree. STEM majors go to learn.

Differential equations can be very relevant for a variety of engineering jobs

It's meant to make you a more well-rounded human, one who understands and appreciates things in the world beyond his/her immediate needs - and maybe wants to be able to hold a conversation that doesn't involve their job.

Facts. Pay for the Paper that might get you a job..while listening to some Dumb@ss of a kid professor force his viewpoints and ideals on you like it matters... There aren't any scholars at the U. Just 15yos in 40+yo bodies
