+84 Working 40 hours a week ain't too much, amirite?

by Dramatic-West4637 1 day ago

Also remember the time you need to calculate the commute, and breaks at work, the time to go and get the things you need, eg food, the time you need to maybe get your kids to and from places, the time you need to fall asleep, the time you need to prepare in the morning. With all that it can quickly take a few more hours out of your day

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Commute is fair, but if your commute is more than 2 hours round trip, you can't even blame the 40 hr work week, that's just choosing a bad job Prepare in the morning and shopping is time management (plus most people shop on the weekends I feel like) Kids is fair too, but you accept that you'll lose a lot of free time by having them

by Mother_Frame9892 1 day ago

True, but even if we say 30 min each way, that is still 1h less, and I don't only shop in the weekend, a lot of foods are better and or may not last a week, and depending on how much you need, one trip would mean a lot of things in your fredge. And the getting prepared for things like sleep, and all that can also quickly be an hour. And yeah that is fair, but even without that, you still quickly use a few more hours every day on things you can avoid.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I dunno how much people do, but still getting ready I just mean for a lot of things, like 30min before bed to get time to fall asleep, also a bit of brushing your teeth and all that, but that's not a lot of time for that, same in the morning, some people like to have a bit of time there as well, so 30min to get read and eat breakfast. But I do agree that you can get at least a few hours of freetime, at least for most, but I don't think most have 5-6h of freetime

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yea 5-6 is most likely only possible with a wfh job, since I forgot to include commute in my breakdown

by Mother_Frame9892 1 day ago

Sounds good, doesn't work.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I have kids so everything takes 3x as long haha.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yeah but that's not an issue caused by the 40 hr work week

by Mother_Frame9892 1 day ago

Right I'm just saying in my case I'm glad I wfh and only actually work a couple hours a day haha

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yeah remote work is a blessing, most people don't do actual work 40 hrs a week, more like 20 to 30, the rest is just wasted time you could be doing something else

phone calls because something is broken, travelling to social occasions, dealing with tech problems, cleaning, waiting for things, just being tired and not motivated to do anything... Happens rarely, choosing to do that in your free time, happens rarely, do that on the weekends, waiting for what?, your issue

by Mother_Frame9892 1 day ago

When else are you supposed to travel for social occasion other than free time? Also i agree, there are enough things that "happen rarely" that making a list like that becomes a joke.

Let's start with the question of what you actually do for work. Then we can work out why every person experiences work differently and gets physically and emotionally drained in different amounts. If my job were extremely fun and relaxing I could work 80h a week and I wouldn't care. Sometimes it's not about the amount of hours put into a job, it's the amount of stress concentrated into those 40h that makes a difference.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

This is what I came to say. Sure, I only, "work 40 hours a week," but when you include the commute, the unpaid time I spend at work to avoid traffic, the unpaid time I end up doing at home, the very constant nature of my work, and the emotional labor I have to deal with, it's more accurate to say I am *paid* 40 hours a week. Depending on what's going on, sometimes I go home and need to do nothing for two hours just to function.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

So, what's your job?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I teach middle school.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I work 60+ hours a week but I run a coffee shop with my wife. Half that time is playing games, watching TV, playing piano, whatever I want really. We get busy too and thats great but I have no problem hanging out in my establishment chilling,, make coffee and sandwiches. Its pretty great.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Exactly my point.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I think the frustration comes in when you work 40 hours a week and still can't afford to buy groceries and pay rent. It's hard to find a second job that works around those 40 hours especially if you have kids.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Whether you have it worse is irrelevant. Also while you technically might work those specified hours, that doesn't count time dedicated to work that isn't considered work.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

It's not that bad but it could be better

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yeah this is unpopular, tracks.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yes, but how long is your commute? I work 8 hour days with an hour lunch 5 days a week. An hour commute each way stretches it from an 8 hour day to an 11 hour day. In the mornings, I barely wake up in time to enjoy my morning coffee before work, and in the evenings, ive got maybe two, three hours between when I get home and when I go to bed. Add in all the things you have to do (laundry, housekeeping, grocery shopping plus if you have kids) and it really doesnt leave you with a ton of time each day.

32 hour work weeks. Ftw

by Anonymous 1 day ago

For real 🙏

by Dramatic-West4637 1 day ago

It's fine

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yeah, forty definitely isn't too much. There's an old labor slogan that goes back who knows how far. Eight hours for work, eight hours for leisure, eight hours for rest.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Just curious, how old are you?

Here to ask the same question

If you want to be career oriented, that's up to you. Most people do not have plenty of time left over for their hobbies after a draining 40 hours work week plus commutes plus their other commitments like family and kids plus reserving time to stay healthy with cooking and exercise The data suggests that 32 hr work week is not only better for everybody's physical and mental health but is literally more productive for GDP too. Keeping everyone at work is a deliberate political choice

by Anonymous 23 hours ago

As someone with 37h work week, I can still tell you, that less hours is still better, sure you can have time for things after even with more hours done, but not only are you going to be more tired, but you also just have less hours, if everyone worked 37h, it would only be 3h less, but that is still 3h more to do whatever you like. Also not everyone has bad time management, some just have long commutes to and from work, and are tired afterwards, as they might also have lots of chores to do, cook food, get kids, ect, that can quickly take away a large part of the time you have, and then you are even more tired, so now you don't really feel like working on your hobbies.

by Anonymous 22 hours ago

You have to take into account the time it takes for getting ready to work and commuting to work. Also for some people work can be so draining they have no energy left after work, some people are slow to adapt their rythm and changes from morning to evening or night are really taxing. Biggest factor would be each persons energy levels, some people have more energy, some people less. Some people need to sleep 6 hours and others need to sleep 10h. Some people might be able to go to sleep right away, others it can take an hour or more. Some people have energy to do gym, work and other hobbies on the same day, for others just work drains them dry of energy. When i waws able to work the sweet spot was like 32h max per week and maximum of 4 days of work per week :)

Working 40 hrs a week in Mexico and still having time for hobbies isn't that crazy. It's all about time management.

by jody86 22 hours ago

That's what im saying

by Dramatic-West4637 22 hours ago

Yes, it's livable, but that doesn't mean "good". For a lot of occupations, people only really need around 50-70% of that time to produce all that is required, and with advanced technology, probably <50% for some jobs. It could be so much better.

by Anonymous 21 hours ago

Nah, it sucks. With 40 hours as the baseline, many salaried positions will push for 50. Add in a commute and most of your day is taken up. Got a family or a house to maintain? Yeah there's not much time left in the day to do things you enjoy

by Derrick30 21 hours ago

I prefer to have four ten hr shifts over five eights. The worst I've had is six twelves I call it 666 shift because its evil and its 6 to 6 six days a week.

by Anonymous 21 hours ago

It is and it isn't. There's too many variables involved for this to be unpopular or popular.

by Anonymous 21 hours ago

Poor time management derives from the same lack of discipline that keeps people in low paying jobs.

by Anonymous 20 hours ago

If you take the hours of jobs that need to be done and divide by the people we got, it isn't close 40. It's not that we're working 40 hours, it's that someone else isn't and sucking our money from the government.

by Anonymous 20 hours ago

Yeah, why ask for anything better when you could have it the mexican way with 8 extra hours a week. We should totally just accept the status quo...
