+69 People who irrationally support high speed rail projects outside of the northeast corridor have a flawed understanding of its usefulness in the United states, amirite?

Someone who lived in China is a expert on U.S. high speed rails usefulness, great thanks bud, did you finish your homework?

I think the idea of a truly national hsr network in the U.S. is pretty far fetched due to the distances however, I don't think the NE corridor is the only area hsr is viable. (Los Vegas / LA, Texas triangle, Florida, Great Lakes region ) For instance , most European democracies are able to build hsr far cheaper then California's attempt and there's a good argument to be made that most of Californias struggles where self inflicted by overly aggressive regulatory and legal regimes that could be reformed.

I swear 90% of California's problems come back to how they handle property.

It would be great in Colorado, California, Utah… places that have lots of tourists and crowded highways. Yes it wouldn't solve everything, but it would solve a lot of problems.

Not really, what are they going to do when they get to to Denver or Salt Lake City,? Walk to Elites Park and Moab or the Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak? Walk to the ski resorts?

Denver already has a lightrail and bus system. When I drive down I park at the northernmost part and take the lightrail in

You can take the Bustang bus to most ski resorts from Denver. Lots of people do this because driving 70 in bad weather suuuuuucks (putting chains on by the side of a mountain road in a snowstorm is not my idea of a good time) and we prefer to leave it to the professionals. Now public transit within Denver itself is terrible, but if you just wanted to come to Colorado to ski this would actually work pretty well.

as if anyone is even talking about it

I would love high speed rail here in the US. I get spoiled every time I travel in Europe where they have excellent public transportation and rail service.

People only supported in theory. They don't really support it. Tell people that they're gonna raise their taxes to pay for the high-speed rail and suddenly they've changed their mind.

None of these arguments address the usefulness of high speed rail. Of course places without fast public transportation are heavily car-dependent, that's exactly why rail would be useful!

The only people this is unpopular with are the people you're talking about

I suspect that a lot of them don't even live in the US and have zero idea of the scale of things here like a lot of Europeans. We had family from Germany visiting while we lived in San Diego, they asked about visiting Yellowstone over a weekend.. like leave Saturday and come home Sunday and have time to visit the park. They had a hard time wrapping their mind around the idea that we could not even drive there and back in that timeframe, much less have time to do anything. In their mind it was just a few hours away.

In terms of square miles of country, China is comparable in size to the US, and they manage to do it
