+91 No, it is the concept of death that scares me. Not the pain, but the unknown that comes after it. amirite?

So it goes

by Anonymous 4 days ago

This is not unpopular. 2 billion years of evolution have taught us to fear death

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Try to remember the time before you were born. Do remember anything from that nothingness? Same thing with death, your consciousness won't be there to think about or experience nothingness. For me that makes accepting death easier. I (my mind) won't be there to worry about it.

I like this

by Big_Dog 4 days ago

Essentially the Mark Twain quote, "I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it."

by Anonymous 4 days ago

That's actually really helpful.

by Remarkable_Injury 4 days ago

This is a very common opinion

by Anonymous 4 days ago

I imagine it's like sleeping a dreamless sleep. It's simply nothing

by Anonymous 4 days ago

I agree, this is what I believe. But unfortunatly thinking of it like this leaves me horrified, not at ease.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Pre-you people were flushing toilets or whatever in those days, months, years etc before you were eyes wide open. The time before you will be the same as the time after you. You know the toilets or whatever

by Anonymous 4 days ago

The visual novel "Slay the Princess" actually really helped with my fear of oblivion.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Since I'm mentally ill, here are some even more horrifying ideas: What if when you die, you are conscious but completely deprived of all your senses? What if you're stuck in a dream in your head, and as your brain matter decays your perception of time slows down infinitely and the dream you're in becomes more and more distorted until you are driven mad inside your own decaying brain? I'm pretty sure that's what happens when you die. Let me know if that helps.

Bro..

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Do you fear tomorrow? Tomorrow is unknown. Dont spend too much time focusing on what comes after life or you will miss life.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

While your second line is a good point, your first line is not. Tomorrow is unknown but I can take reasonable guesses about what may or may not happen as an 'in general' statement with a fairly high degree of accuracy, at least for the big things. I will drive to work; I will see my brother, etc. Even the unexpected things aren't really *that* unexpected. But with death? It could be ANYTHING. It is nothing except wild guesses. Trying to act like these two fears are relatable isn't fair.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Death and tomorrow are different, but your confidence about tomorrow is a total fantasy. If you haven't faced any unexpected life changing events, you will. Tomorrow you could face death after all. Tomorrow you could become paralyzed. Tomorrow your brother could end his own life. Tomorrow is actually more unknown than death, and the fear of death, although common, is pretty shallow and unwarranted compared to the fear of tomorrow. If you aren't afraid of tomorrow, you shouldn't be afraid of death.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Hard disagree. Everything you just listed as possibilities fall into the realm of things that "aren't really *that* unexpected". I am well aware those things could happen, they are possibilities on my radar. I am human, I have seen things like those happen to humans before, so I understand them. I am not afraid of something I have an understanding of. There is no way to have an understanding of what happens after you die.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

After a while you get more used to the idea. What was harder to cope with, at least for me, is the realization that not only does God not exist, but neither does free will. We're just one giant chain reactions of neurons firing causing other neurons to fire and so on. "Choices" don't really exist and we're nothing more than extremely complicated automatons. Have a good night!

"Always look on the bright side of life! I mean, what have you got to lose? You know, you come from nothing. You're going back to nothing. What have you lost? Nothing" -Monty Python's Life of Brian

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Not remotely unpopular

by Wymanbrendon 4 days ago

Spoiler alert: It's the same as the unknown that comes before life.

by Anonymous 4 days ago

I think most of us fear that we just don't matter. And the ultimate of not mattering is to become nothing. When I think about it, I feel panicky and anxious. And then I remind myself that I was nothing before I was born and it wasn't bad.

by Big-Fox 4 days ago

Where you suffering before you were born? No? Being dead is probably like that.

by Zealousideal_Sun 4 days ago

I felt like that until my appendix ruptured. I was no longer afraid to die, I just wanted to be out of pain.

by SquashOk837 4 days ago

Nothingness is not floating in a void. You don't experience nothingness.

by Minute_Tomatillo5977 4 days ago

I remember the nothingness before I was born ... oh wait, no I don't.

by mosciskiluz 4 days ago

It's not unpopular

by TemperatureFine 3 days ago

Once I'm dead, I'll be fine. It's the crossing over that keeps me up at night. People who die in their sleep are extremely lucky

by Anonymous 3 days ago

This is probably the most consistently popular opinion throughout history, across all species. It's not even opinion, it's the root of our survival instinct

by Anonymous 3 days ago

You know, whether true or not, the book Journey of Souls really helped me come to find peace with the idea of death.

by spencernoah 3 days ago

Serious question, do you think about this a lot? Like, does it keep you up at night? It did for me as a teenager and it turned out I was dealing with undiagnosed major depression and I just wanna make sure you're okay.

by Cultural-Valuable869 3 days ago

It's the opposite for me. I'm just scared of the pain on the way there. I don't mind becoming atoms at all.

by HorrorSkill2657 3 days ago

I know how you feel. It's a well studied phenomenon in human psychology called "existential dread." You may find comfort in the knowledge that many, many people have felt this way for centuries and it is not at all uncommon feeling to have. I used to feel like I was trapped in a prison I couldn't escape from. I overcame it by recognizing that it's inevitability also made it irrelevant.

by Majestic-Alarm 3 days ago

Hey, yeah, don't remind me of the complex I gave myself at 8 years old trying to go to sleep. Will say, did have me oddly more accepting of death in itself after that.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

i agree with you but this isn't unpopular most people are terrified, be lucky you are only 19

by Anonymous 3 days ago

For me it's the concept of saying goodbye forever to everyone and everything you know

by Anonymous 3 days ago

I fear death but I fear a painful death more.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

After a long day of work I just want to go to bed and sleep at night. I imagine that's how it will feel at the end of my life. Then again I think there is more after death, I'm not lucky enough to die and be at peace forever.

by Flatleynona 3 days ago

Not me. There's no unknown. Its nothing. You won't BE THERE OP. There will be no unknown thing to experience. I fear death because it's the end of life, not because of what comes after....there's no after.

by VastSalamander 3 days ago

You should definitely read some stoic philosophy. The Stoics spoke a lot about how to overcome the fear of death. Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, Seneca. "I cannot escape death, but at least I can escape the fear of it."

by hellerhubert 3 days ago

The problem is, you think you will be experiencing the nothing. You won't. Think about before you were born. Did you experience that nothing? Nope.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

It is nothing as it was nothing before you were born. There's no point in worrying about it since you won't be worried about it after you die.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

You are going to die, there's no way around it. There's only 3 options. First is there's an afterlife. As I see it, as long as you aren't a bad person you'll be fine. If and that's a big if, there's some super powerful being in control of everything I really doubt it's petty. Second is you go on. Maybe reincarnation. Yeah! You get to start all over but probably won't know about the times before. Or even better you're some form of energy and can go check out space if you want idk. Third is my personal favorite. Nothing happens when you die. This is great because you won't be around to care and nothing matters. It's not black nothingness it's true nothingness. You won't know you're not here/there anything.

by Able_Set 3 days ago

The weirdest thing about NDEs is that, in my experience, atheists consistently see nothing and religious people see the afterlife. Honestly it makes me curious to see... but not curious enough to die for it lol

by Anonymous 3 days ago

I see a ton of this too. Would be cool but horrifying if everyone had their version of what the afterlife is. Makes you think though, who/what set that system up?? Wish we had the answers for these things

by Anonymous 3 days ago

by Dry_Wrangler 3 days ago
