+99 "Pro-Wrestling" is a legitimate sport. amirite?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

It's a live act, more akin to theatre than sport

by ophelia37 2 days ago

This. By the OP's measure, acting is also a sport.

by Kamronmohr 2 days ago

I was thinking more circus acts. You might see impressive displays of gymnastics or strength but it's not a sport.

by schroedernelle 2 days ago

Same thing honestly

by ophelia37 2 days ago

Strength isn't an Olympic sport. Gymnastics is a category of sporting events. Point is that the Olymlic gymnastic events have a set of rules such that they're adjudicated as a competition. The circus act isn't doing that. Pro-wrestling isn't doing that. You could make a sport out of it where you judge pairs of wrestlers for their choreography and athleticism in the same way we do for things like the floor, but that isn't what's happening on WWE.

by schroedernelle 2 days ago

Also a stunt show. Impressive skillset but stunt people showing what they can do.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I would agree if the matches weren't scripted, but you're basically arguing that theater is a sport.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

it's theater

by Anonymous 2 days ago

It's real athleticism. It's genuinely impressive what they can do and the lengths they go to. It's not a real sport because there isn't a real winner.

by schroedernelle 2 days ago

No

by ophelia37 2 days ago

Do you consider the circus a sport too? They also have to keep in shape, practice their acts, etc

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Nope it's not a sport it's a entertainment show.

by vinceleffler 2 days ago

No. It's acting.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Wrestling is a sport. Pro Wrestling is a show.

by vicentaschmeler 2 days ago

It's an impressive show of strength and athleticism to be sure. But to me, sport implies an unknown outcome that is decided based on competition. If the outcome is predetermined, it's not a sport.

by cummingscaden 2 days ago

It's theatre, not sport. This isn't even an opinion lmao

by Dangerous_Gur_1327 2 days ago

Yeah and with the proliferation of sports gambling I'm not so sure pro wrestling is any more predetermined than any other sport

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Stupid take.

by vicentaschmeler 2 days ago

It's physical theater. So by definition not a sport because its not a real competition

by gleichnerzechar 2 days ago

Have you heard of theater?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I also think Medieval Times jousting dinner show should be a professional sport.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Sports are fun because the outcome isn't predetermined.

by Unlikely-School 2 days ago

You must really hate movies and TV shows

by Aiyana91 2 days ago

What?

by Unlikely-School 2 days ago

I regret to inform you that the outcomes in movies and TV shows are predetermined

by Aiyana91 2 days ago

Okay? What does that have to do with sports?

by Unlikely-School 2 days ago

I didn't imply anything like that. All I said was sports are fun because no one knows who's going to win.

by Unlikely-School 2 days ago

Just because it's structured as a sport doesn't mean it actually is a sport. As someone else has said here earlier, it's more theatre than anything else

by Virtual-Meaning 2 days ago

I see it more as "sporty theater". It is not a real competition and the "winners" are already predetermined.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

LOL no. It's entertainment, not a sport.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Naah "Entertainment Wrestling" is really just theatre for the masses. Even in movies you still need to be in shape so it's more performance than sport.

by WoodenClimate 2 days ago

I'm a wrestling fan but this is like saying stunt performers should be seen as a sport which wrestlers have done on the side. It's long form story telling and should be closer associated with film and tv acting

by Prize-Employee-5121 2 days ago

Stupid opinion, but you at least give a rationale. Good unpopular opinion.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I see it more like theatre with acrobatics than a sport but I will agree to call it an athletic performance.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Nope. Not even close. It's an act- not a sport. Wrestlers are not in anywhere near as good of shape as Olympic athletes.

by Wrong-Return-573 2 days ago

Pro-wrestlers are definitely great athletes, but they compete as entertainers.

by ayden39 2 days ago

This is satire, right?? Please tell me you're trolling me right now?!

by Obvious_Country6269 2 days ago

Real sports shouldn't have predetermined outcomes.

by AdventurousLobster57 2 days ago

Oh….sweetie

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I'm a huge wrestling fan, but pro wrestling is inherently NOT a sport by virtue of the fact the winner is pre-determined.

by Rippinkathleen 2 days ago

I am a big pro-wrestling fan and whilst it is pathetic for people to judge others for enjoying it, there is no way it should ever be considered a legitimate sport in the way that other sports are considered. It is its own (admittedly awesome) thing. It has just as much in common with pantomime as it does with competitive combat sports.

by Subject_Heat 2 days ago

It's a performance. It's great fun but it's not a sport by nature of being scripted. It's daft to have the National Anthem played before PLEs

by Elnaquitzon 2 days ago

It is not a legitimate sport, because sport has 2 components: athleticism and competition. There's no competition there, because results are predetermined. However, it is more of a 'sport' than a 'TV series', despite what the WWE has been telling its audience for 20+ years. I always cringed when they ran skits of people confessing crimes or unveiling plans, while a camera man was recording them and broadcasting it on national TV. No one is recording Walter White when he does his stuff, but we get to see a POV of his actions anyway. Wrestlers are being recorded, 'for real', as they are aware to be part of a TV show that the company promotes. I think 'sports entertainment' or 'TV series about a staged sport' are the best way to explain it.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

It's a play but with bad acting
