+93 Firearms are sporting equipment, amirite?

by Anonymous 3 days ago

Exactly, I'm not saying that everyone should be able to just go and buy an AR (even though people already are assuming that's what I mean). It's the same as why in some countries you have to show ID even for a cooking knife. A lot of things can be dangerous, but only in the wrong hands.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

Almost like if they did a background check on people buying a gun at the time of sale???

by Anonymous 3 days ago

I'm not disagreeing with that. Of all the guns I own I've happily gotten a background check for all of them except one. The only time I didn't was because it was at a gun show from a private seller and in my state no background check is required for purchases like that. But I don't even like that. I think having background checks for all firearms purchases is fine and even a good law to have.

90% of Americans have "wrong hands"

by shanel00 3 days ago

There are more guns in this country than people. Yet somehow 90% isn't qualified? Yeah okayโ€ฆ

by Quirky_Item_5771 3 days ago

A huge portion of the American population owns guns but don't commit crimes with them lmao. If 90% of Americans used guns with malicious intent we would literally be in an apocalypse.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

If even 10% of Americans use guns with malice or incompetence we'd beโ€ฆ wellโ€ฆ here

by Queasy_Ad_1967 3 days ago

You are right...but its also the other things too. And if a baseball killed as many people as guns do I would also think that thier should be baseball control laws.

Can't help where I was born

by Anonymous 3 days ago

Yeah I know

by Popular_Abrocoma_369 3 days ago

Just because YOU use a gun responsibly doesn't mean other people do.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

And you can easily flip the narrative, just because someone uses a gun irresponsibility doesn't mean other people do.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

how many people with guns do we need to kill someone?

by Popular_Abrocoma_369 3 days ago

And if there was an effective way to tell the people who use it safely and responsibly apart from the people who use it to harm others then we would never be having this discussion.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

Same thing could be said about literally anything

by Anonymous 3 days ago

There is for almost everything else! The way to find out before it's too late is "Woah... why is that person holding this here, we should deal with that" The problem with guns is that by the time you are thinking it, it's already too late.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

Sure but the vast majority do, same with baseball bats, lacrosse sticks, and any other sporting equipment that can be used as a weapon.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

None of those are literally designed to kill though. A gun is a weapon being used for sport. A baseball bat is a sport tool that is used as a weapon.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

What about javelin, discuss and bow+arrow? Designed originally for killing. Should be banned then, no? Or are they similarly "bad" sports equipment cause designed for killing

by Anonymous 3 days ago

There's a lot of people that don't use knives or fireworks responsibly either. What's your point?

by Abshiretyshawn 3 days ago

Nor does it mean he takes adequate precautions to prevent those guns from falling into the hands of someone who will not use them responsibly.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

Dude... I didn't even quite understand what you're saying. No one denied there are responsible gun owners. But just because people like you exist doesn't mean guns should be classified as sporting equipment for most people. Also it's a silly comparison because there's basically no other sporting equipment someone can use to kill 10 people in 60 seconds. Even the closest you'd get to a gun--something like a baseball bat-- is still nowhere in the same realm.

by ProgrammerNeat 3 days ago

I'm saying that I get frustrated with multiple sides of the argument. I don't own a gun for defense, I don't own a gun for hunting, and I don't intend to kill anything with any gun I own. I use it purely for shooting at inanimate objects like targets, but a lot of people seem to think that's not a valid reason for gun ownership.

by Anonymous 3 days ago

But there's no other sporting equipment you have to leave at the field? Plus, plenty of people in the US own enough property to have a private range on their own land. I understand that guns are dangerous, but it's also not fair to assume people can't use them for sport outside of a range.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

If you lined everyone up right and sharpened the ole pole vault, then maybe you could do it with other sporting equipment

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Well, most people around the world who are involved with shooting sports seem to realize that some regulations on the guns are okay and good for society. This includes places with a shooting culture that aren't trying to ban these types of guns, just license them. Are you okay with that?

by maggiovergie 2 days ago

I don't think there's an issue with licensing and gun control at all. A lot of people are assuming that I think anyone should be able to buy a gun but I absolutely DON'T believe that. I'm just saying that people should be allowed to view guns as sporting equipment (albeit, dangerous sporting equipment) if they aren't intending to use them to kill something.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Cool story: sport is the only sensible way to get guns in Poland. Other is hunting and then there is collecting guns but the exam is famously hard and before police who don't really want people to own guns So yeah I'm a sportsman hehe

by thaddeus71 2 days ago

Tbh I don't even disagree with strong gun laws, like I'm fine with licensing, backgrounds checks, waiting periods, etc. I just wish people would find using guns solely for sport as a more acceptable thing rather than assuming they need to be used for defense or that they're gonna be used for crime.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Some guns are, yes. But not all. My 12g double-barrel shotgun is a sporting firearm, for skeet shooting and/or hunting. My suppressed 9mm PCC is for home defense, not sport. Even the ones that are for sport tho, there's a caveat. It's not fair to act like a skeet shooting shotgun or hunting rifle is on par with a baseball bat or golf cleats.

Bait used to be believable

by Shanahansebasti 2 days ago

It's not bait tho?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Despite what you believe or use them for, the entire purpose of its invention was for otherwise.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Doesn't meant purpose hasn't evolved for some (like Op). Cars were invented for travel, we now race them for entertainment.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

That's a really going point. Same with airplanes too, in like the opposite way. Originally designed for transport but now used in wars.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Cars are still primarily for travel. Guns are still primarily for killing.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I don't have the exact numbers, but I would say that 99% of civilian owned firearms around the world have never been used to kill a human, or even an animal for that fact. While I do hunt, the majority of my time shooting is at skeet or steel for sport.

by Reasonable_Bit 2 days ago

Cars are still primarily for travel. Guns are still primarily for killing. How do you arrive at that conclusion? There are 380 million privately owned guns in the U.S. Most have been used for something, but extremely few have been used for killing or even hurting people.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

If its sporting equipment then I don't know why you need to be able to own them. Just go to a shooting range and leave them there

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Do I have to leave a baseball bat at the baseball field? Or a hockey stick at the rink?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I can't shoot people with a baseball bat

by Anonymous 2 days ago

You can kill them just as dead.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Would you trust other people to take care of your cell phone? Here you pay lots of money for your cell phone but because others looked at underage porn on theirs which is illegal YOU now have to surrender your phone so you don't do it too, you can only use it after you wait in a long line at a building nowhere near your house.

by flossie42 2 days ago

I can't shoot people with a cell phone

by Anonymous 2 days ago

How many people have lost their life from online bullying done on cell phones? Or gambling, divorces and domestic violence from cell phone use? Happens all the time and everyday but "it's not as scary". But the example of something you use being regulated to the point you can't take it home can be used for anything.

by flossie42 2 days ago

A lot of ranges unfortunately don't have safes to keep member's guns. Besides, it's a lot nicer to use your gun that you've adjusted than a rental.

by ophelia34 2 days ago

I mean, you can, but you can't kill multiple people in a few seconds

by Queasy_Ad_1967 2 days ago

Hunting tools and sporting equipment should be in the same category IMO. But one thing that isn't mentioned is the purpose of the 2nd Amendment in the first place: to give the population a fair chance at overthrowing a tyrant

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Not all firearms are alike and treating them like they are is a lil disingenuous tbh. I absolutely (as an American as well and US Army veteran) would agree with you if so many of those firearms weren't used to also perpetuate mass/school shootings and other forms of unnecessary harm. We might be responsible owners but not everyone is.

by Kayaturner 2 days ago

So you've got no problem with a law saying that a person cannot own firearms for the purpose of self defence?

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Some guns are sporting equipment. Many others are not. Still more are multi-purpose, even if only used for one of those purposes. And, to be quite honest, there is zero need for a Constitutional Amendment protecting sproting equipment in my country. It exists for different reasons and sportsmen are simply grateful that they can take advantage of it.

by reichellaila 2 days ago

So people getting killed is a sport to you? Interesting.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

guns are weapons in the wrong hands, most people who own guns are the wrong hands

by nilsnolan 2 days ago

You use a gun a sporting equipment, fine, but the idea that that is what it is is a bit like arguing that because you have a knife that you like to look at yourself in people who don't think knives are mirrors are wrong.

by Some-Memory 2 days ago

I will agree that firearms can be sporting equipment. Hunting is a sport.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Most rational leftists are understanding of this imo.

by Realistic_Many 2 days ago

They're more of a tool than sporting equipment.

by Chance-Bit 2 days ago

Yeah, we bring ours camping for feral dogs and bears. Haven't had to use them yet but gotten close a couple times. But also, it's a great time going to the range with a friend or 2 then going to the brewery afterward.

by Abshiretyshawn 2 days ago

I get what the OP is saying, I used to live with a guy who owned a bow solely for target shooting, it is not unreasonable to own a weapon for purely a hobby. But unfortunately, I do believe they are in the minority.

by Suspicious-Raise-887 2 days ago

Exactly! The problem is that it's so polarized that when I tell people I own guns just for sport they usually get pissed at me regardless of their view on guns. Either they think I'm evil for owning a gun in the first place, or inversely they think I'm stupid for owning a gun but not using it for concealed carry.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I mean this was common sense. Most sporting goods stores do or did sell guns. Most schools use to have a shooting club for sport back in the day.

by Quirky_Item_5771 2 days ago

Shooting is a sport as much as chess is a sport in my eyes

by Queasy_Ad_1967 2 days ago

Find a different hobby that doesn't involve a lethal weapon.
