+96 The "Chosen One" Trope in storytelling at this point for me is beyond uninteresting for me, it is so common and it rarely has any shock value for me. amirite?

Dune is not a chosen one story. It's a warning of following charismatic leaders. Read the second book

Alright, halfway though the main book. Are all the 6 herbert books worth it? And I mean Paul does have some Chosen One going on. The KH, Lisan al Gaib, all of them screams prophecised to come. But I do have some spoilers about the Holy war :(

Yes they are all worth it. I love them. And I hear ya but most of that was stories planted to keep control of populations.

Definitely would read the rest once the main is over. Thanks

Dune is literally the opposite of a chosen one story. It is a warning of that story. Have you not seen the movie yet? I don't wanna spoil anything for you but trust me, it is not it chosen one story. But you are definitely supposed to believe it is.

It's not meant to have "shock value".

by Verner65 4 days ago

Yeah, But it is suppose to be one of the major plot point for many a stories And at this point I don't feel any excitement over it Doesn't mean Chosen One are inherently bad. But it's just me who don't like it as much as I used to once.

That's a personal preference then, not an unpopular opinion

Well then my personal opinion of something is unpopular

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Not everything is about keeping you on the edge of your seat and "shocking" you

by Anonymous 4 days ago

Do not disagree Maybe I phrased it wrong But all I wanted to say was I don't like Chosen One trope, definitely a me problem

by Anonymous 4 days ago

That's why I could never get into the Dune books or movies.

It's good, don't know about the movies but the books are very hard to read if you are not native English speaker like me, had to take so many break. But it's really good

It depends how it's done. If someone is destined and we've been shown the whole..religion?...around it to be true, then yeah I'm not a huge fan. It's not off putting or anything. But if someone has just sorta named themselves the chosen one, the religion hasn't been shown to be true or something like that. Then it can be a great thing. For example, a character who is driven by acheiving a destiny they themselves find they are for can be a great character arc that leads to them proving themselves wrong, showing themselves that they them got it and not desitiny or something else. It can also lead to plot twists with who the chosen one was all along. It can be handled well.

Yup. The "hero's journey" is also overplayed and no longer has the same shock value that it once had for me when the Odyssey first came out.

Nah fr, I missed the days walking across athens with my homie Beuphacretus, and listen to the bards singing the crazy tales of Odysseus and his men. Oh days, come back😞
