The visa exist to help prove that you can live in the country and work as a legal citizen of the country. Thats the process, just handing out citizen to anyone leads to alot of people leeching off government support.

All citizens are in general gaining a net positive due to the folks who come here (I'm American) and work picking our crops and doing other jobs that most citizens do not wish to do. They are often paying taxes without benefiting from being able to receive any social aid. They are often very law abiding as getting caught for something minor could result in their deportation. I have been saying this for years and ironically and much to my surprise just last week I saw a clip of the president who ran on a platform of deportation admitting that it had harmed farmers and other industries that have long relied on undocumented workers. Keeping people we know we need undocumented is grossly exploitative. We do need a better system.

The label "illegal" doesn't mean much. If anything, an illegal immigrant becoming legal in this way or a similar way would get them on records, and they'd likely start paying taxes if they weren't before. I don't exactly agree that it should be that easy, but the only way to reduce illegal immigration is to somehow make legal immigration easier than illegal immigration in general.

Every country has laws against illegal immigration, and there is plenty of reasons for this. What if you've illegally crossed the border to escape justice in your own country? Should we still give you a temporary citizenship/visa/passport/whatever simply because you've proven you could do unskilled labor well enough? And even if you're not a criminal, should you be getting the same social benefits actual citizens who are paying actual taxes get simply because you've proven you can do unskilled labor well enough? And should hiring illegal immigrants be incentivized? In case you're not getting it, your suggestion will only make human trafficking easier.

This is definitely unpopular as say a Mexican being given a US passport doesn't mean they can work or live here. Just means they can cross borders easier. If you want to work in a country that you're not native to you generally need a work visa, not just a passport.

The problem is that we don't know who they are, why they're here, or why they left their former country. If they're breaking our rules upon entering the country, how can we trust that they'll follow the other rules set in place? If they come into the country legally, there's no guess work to any of this and chances are they'll be more likely to be law abiding and contributing citizens.

You need to be given a chance. Not an automatic determination that the country recognizes you as a citizen. Citizenship is still somewhat sacred in the U.S. and elsewhere. To expect to be given something automatically that some have worked decades for is an insult to those people. We all deserve human rights, fair treatment and equal opportunity. Nobody deserves automatic citizenship.
