+89 The Xbox naming scheme is one of the biggest reasons why the hardware brand has failed, amirite?

by Lanky-Internal 2 days ago

The Wii U famously didn't sell well because they did nothing to show how it differered from the normal Wii. And the name didn't help address the feel that it was the same console either.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Let's also say that the upgrade was trash. No one was forking out 300 dollars for 1080p instead of 720p and more storage lol. Nintendo graphics will never be good, it's not their aim. I don't care if the console is ok, 4k, 1440p or 1080p. They have to come up with a better value proposition

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Nintendo Pu was right there

by Anonymous 2 days ago

The wii u failed because Wii U wasnt distinct enough from the Wii. Surely the Xbox One followed by the One S followed by the One X followed by the Series S and Series X wont confuse anyone. Nintendo learned and called the Switch 2... the Switch 2 Xbox should have just skipped and made the 360 the 3 and all would be fine

by Pkerluke 2 days ago

It should have been X box 720

by Master_Text 2 days ago

And a make of 1080 when they make a1080. I loved that game

by StockChair6180 2 days ago

Xbox 360, then Xbox 420

by Anonymous 2 days ago

xbox just needs to make their next system the "xbox 7" and then just go up from there. i say they go with 7 since then it'll look better than the ps6.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Xbox 8 logo has so much potential, too

by Anonymous 2 days ago

They can try to pass it off as the xbox infinite too if they wanna save face, then do xbox 9 and act like no one notices

by Hansenannetta 2 days ago

Just read the current name as Roman numerals and go from there. Next is the Xbox series XI, then Xbox series XII.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

This would be super clean but many people would inevitably be incapable of reading Roman numerals

by Prudent-Horse 2 days ago

A lot of Americans would probably think Xbox XI is some sort of communist propaganda campaign and boycott it

by Ornery-Refuse4580 2 days ago

But it would only be the 5th generation.

by Klutzy-Mud6199 2 days ago

They just renamed the "Microsoft Surface Pro for Business 11th generation Copilot+ PC - Snapdragon" to "Surface 13". Someday they'll learn.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

I feel like this is a very common opinion.

by Anonymous 2 days ago

Yeah their "other naming scheme" was to go back to one instead of just making it four.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Nintendo had their biggest hits with the Wii and the Switch. If the hardware was something the people want name doesn't matter.

by schambergerarno 1 day ago

SNES was a great name imo. It immediate made the NES feel old and it worked well with Super Mario already being a thing. And it didn't matter that they didn't then have a numbering system if N64 and GameCube etc were good names.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Saying the SNES was a bad name might be one of the worst takes I have ever seen. That name rolls off the tongue and jumps off the page. Everyone wanted to have a piece of the Super Nintendo in the 90s.

by imastrosin 1 day ago

Kinda helps reiterate how the naming scheme is hard to get, but you've mixed something up. After the 360, it was the Xbox One. An updated/slimmer version became the base version as Xbox One S. Then the Xbox One X was release as the pro, higher performance version. Next generation launched the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X. The One label is the previous generation, Series is current. They didn't continue with "One".

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yeah, XBox failed with the naming of the XBox 360, named because when you see it you do a 360 and walk away.

by MedicalSpite 1 day ago

That would be a 180.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Never fails

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Whoosh!

by MedicalSpite 1 day ago

Well, if you saw the Xbox 360 and you did a 360, you'd be facing it again.

by Shanon73 1 day ago

yeah and after facing it again walk away by taking steps backwards. they didnt say anything about walking away by walking forward towards where their facing. honestly such a power move to 360 then walk away

by Murky-Iron9235 1 day ago

A 360 would mean you just spin in place and end up facing the same direction again Also, the Xbox 360 was the better console back then. While the PS3 was more powerful on paper, most multi platform games ran better on it and sometimes even looked better due to the difficulty of developing for the CELL structure of the PS3. Also, the Xbox had the two biggest exclusives of that generation.

by edwinkling 1 day ago

A 360 would mean you just spin in place and end up facing the same direction again You're too young to get that joke, I guess.

by MedicalSpite 1 day ago

If they had called it xbox420 they would have alienated half their user base, but made it a must have item for the other half.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

It's a factor for sure. Literally just today, I was recommending a game to a friend who has Xbox. I asked which Xbox he has, to make sure it's available to him, and his response was "I have no idea." I don't think that sort of confusion happens with Nintendo or Sony consoles.

by ComfortableSouth 1 day ago

Games pass has COD and it turns any TV into a smart TV. I play PC I don't have an Xbox but idk seems pretty good.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

You can get a $20 device to turn any TV into a smart device, and Call of Duty is just a mediocre game that they keep putting another coat of paint on, it hasn't changed significantly since MW2.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

No you cannot

by parker71 1 day ago

There is absolutely no chance that I gonna be able to get a gaming PC for $700cad that can do anything even close to what my Series X can do.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yeah thats because of optimization. I can probably make an under 700 build with better specs, they just wont be decent

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I have the Series S cause I'm broke, that's all I need. Don't need no Alienware or whatever of that

by Anonymous 1 day ago

A PC at the price point of an Xbox series X would absolutely be worse performance

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I guess that makes somewhat sense? I never really looked too deep into it. I play games, but I'm not really a hardcore gamer

by Anonymous 1 day ago

You're not going to find a pc that cost 600 dollars than can run 4k/ up to 120. Sony and Microsoft are even selling them for a loss

by Fabiola47 1 day ago

Lots of reasons to own an xbox. Price, simplicity, portability, stability etc

by parker71 1 day ago

Pcs cost way more than an xbox

by Fabiola47 1 day ago

I mean, steam IS gonna be on the next xbox..... seems like they just wanna simplify PC gaming

by Anonymous 1 day ago

the biggest reason is that xbox was just never able to grab the market because of how late they started. they had to compete with Playstation and Nintendo, which were already household names by the time the first xbox came around. of course, the xbox did have some amazing features (and games) the other consoles didn't have, but they simply weren't enough to sway anyone. then came the next consoles, and I'd say 90% of people just bought the next iteration of the console they started with

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Xbox failed?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I mean, seems to be not working considering the tiny market share they have over the hardware gaming industry

by ashleigh59 1 day ago

What exactly is the "hardware gaming industry?"

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Gaming hardware. The PC is obviously first, but after that comes PlayStation, then there is 50 feet of mud and then comes Xbox

by ashleigh59 1 day ago

PS4 and 5 have sold more than Switch 1 and 2. I also don't consider phones gaming hardware

by ashleigh59 1 day ago

You fail Google. Switch has sold 150,000,000+. PS4 sold 114,000,000; PS5 has only sold 80,000,000. Just because you don't consider phone games to be gaming doesn't mean they're not.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I failed Google? The PS4 and 5 combined have sold more than Switch 1 and 2 combined. So no, Switch doesn't dwarf the other consoles at all. And basically nobody buys phones outright to game. The mobile gaming market is just bigger because basically everyone has a phone. And so I find it silly to talk about mobile gaming while talking about consoles

by ashleigh59 1 day ago

Switch 2 just came out; you can't count its sales numbers against a console that's been out for years. Switch alone dwarfs any PlayStation console released after 2000; so does DS.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Because they have the lions share on software, right? Right?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Should of called it the Xbox 540

by Ullricherling 1 day ago

when the PS6 comes out Microsoft should release the Xbox7 :)

by ElectronicLaw7849 1 day ago

Someone never heard of the Super GameBoy 2...

by sengerclotilde 1 day ago

Their naming scheme is as bad as the Fast and furious series

by Anonymous 1 day ago

They really did go with the worst possible names back to back to be very confusing. There has to be at least some kid out there that got the wrong one Christmas morning. Is xbox failing though? I haven't heard about this

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Xbox was that kid that tries too hard to be cooler than the other kids and ends up looking cringe Like dude, we like you, chill

by Anonymous 1 day ago

It didn't help but just like with the WiiU its only a tiny part of the issue

by Ok_Presence 1 day ago

The PC app for playing Microsoft games is also called "Xbox"

by Double_Plum 1 day ago

Xbox isn't/hasn't failed. It never had a chance to catch PS given the huge lead PS had going all the way back to the mid-90s. Besides, Switch sells way more units than either. Plus, Xbox is backed by a giant corporation, while Sony might just sell it PS to a company like Apple.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Sony is also a giant corporation, just not as big as Microsoft. I really dont get the idea that Sony is some underdog company that only makes consoles and builds them in a shed. I mean yes they were bigger when their phones, tape players and cameras were still in demand but it still sells those, publishes movies and songs as well as the Playstation brand and homeappliances

by edwinkling 1 day ago

Sony has had a lot of its core business, consumer electronics, stripped away from it over the last 30 years. Without TVs and PS, it would really just be a legacy electronics company waiting to be put out of its misery.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Xbox doesn't care about their hardware. They're a game studio now

by Anonymous 1 day ago

That's also where the money is - hardware is a loss leader

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Xbox one go home

by Anonymous 1 day ago

ROG XBOX ALLY X is literally the next one coming out. The naming schemes are ridiculous.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I don't think this is an unpopular opinion, I'm pretty sure a lot of people have pointed this out. And it's true, the Xbox series of consoles have the dumbest naming scheme possible.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

They don't care. The PS6 is going to have Game Pass on it and that's all they want at this point.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I don't know I just prefer the UI of the Xbox over the PS. Like I hated the UI on the PS4 so bad

by Anonymous 1 day ago

They called it a 360 because you turned 360 degrees and walked away

by Anonymous 1 day ago

360 degrees is a full circle, meaning you rotate to the exact point you were at prior.

by Tkuhn 1 day ago

Lmao

by Odd_Debate 1 day ago

360 degrees puts you right back where you started, bruh 😆
