A marathon should be run under 4 hours, amirite?
by Clintonvandervo10 hours ago
I gotta say this is an incredibly niche unpopular opinion lol.
by Anonymous10 hours ago
No, it's not. A brisk walking speed is 5km/h, more typical is 4km/h. A marathon in 6 hours is 1.5 times that speed which would make it a jogging speed.
by Anonymous10 hours ago
10 km/h seems to always have been the lower limit of 'running'. All my running coworkers and friends seem to run at least that fast for their easy pace. It's also the speed a C25k expected you to run at, at the end of the program. That would 4h12m for a marathon. I rounded down to 4h.

Do all your running coworkers and friends run their easy pace for 42km? Usain Bolt's world record in the 100m is 37.6 km/h. If he was taking it easy, he'd probably be running at 30 km/h, which finishes a marathon in 1:24. Ya, that's a stupid analysis because I compared a high-speed short distance run against an endurance run. Which is what you're doing comparing a 5km run speed to a 42km run speed.
by Anonymous10 hours ago
The ones that do marathons run them faster than their easy pace.

Even walking a marathon would be hard for the vast majority of people.

I think nearly every weekend except for winter there are organized walking/hiking events of 30-40k. There are several 100k events in a year too.
by Clintonvandervo9 hours ago
"Majority of people" meaning the average person. The average person won't even complete ONE marathon their entire lifetime so yea a lot of people are going feel accomplished by just completing one even if they are slow.
by Anonymous9 hours ago
There were an OP telling people that swimming ain't impressive. These people are pathetic at heart.
by felicita488 hours ago
imagine having so little in your life that you get upset about people being proud of themselves for finishing a marathon
by Sufficient-Baby-87218 hours ago
It's an opinion. I'm not upset, but lot's of people seem to be.
by Clintonvandervo8 hours ago
What's OP's personal best?
by Delicious-Mammoth4127 hours ago
I'll put money down that it's just under the 4 hour mark.
by Anonymous7 hours ago
I'd wager they don't even own running shoes
by Delicious-Mammoth4127 hours ago
We are in accord.

I don't know if people who are into a thing mocking your views on how hard it is it should be taken as evidence you are also into it
by Anonymous6 hours ago
3h59m
by Anonymous6 hours ago
Nice work completely ignoring the massive achievement it is to actually endure 26 miles of running
by LeadingMarket5 hours ago
AND speed Yes, it always has been. But they for sure don't need a jerk who don't even run to tell them how fast should they be running though.
by felicita485 hours ago
yeah. i actively dislike you. well done.
by Confident-Mess-59435 hours ago
I've done five 6hr marathons. And I'm very proud of them. I have a genetic anemia condition that makes extended high intensity workouts very difficult. I'm quite proud of my accomplishments.
by Anonymous5 hours ago
Indeed an unpopular opinion. Some people run marathons for personal achievements.
by Anonymous4 hours ago
I've run 3. Best was 4:08, I think. I was in very good shape. Go do one and tell me how easy it is to break 4:00.
by Anonymous4 hours ago
Marathons can't handle the demand. No risk of them shutting down.
by Clintonvandervo3 hours ago
Lol you are underestimating the undertaking. I ran my first marathon in 4h19 and I can tell you it is no joke.
by Fannie553 hours ago
Simply because many people view finishing the whole damn thing as an accomplishment. It's not about being competitive, just to have a goal and complete it. Nothing wrong with that.
by Anonymous2 hours ago
Have you ever run a marathon?
by verdajast2 hours ago
So what's your PB for a marathon OP?
by Cute_Dragonfly74942 hours ago
I wouldn't be embarrassed to say a ran a marathon at any pace. 4 hours or 6 hours, still ran 26 miles in one go, that's impressive either way.
by Dry-Try-58461 hour ago
What about 4 hours and 31 minutes. Is that ok?
by Klutzy-Read12711 hour ago
No.
by Clintonvandervo1 hour ago
So 4 hours and 32 minutes is out of the question? But… what if I really tried?
by Klutzy-Read127157 minutes ago
A for effort.
by Clintonvandervo27 minutes ago
Isn't a good walking pace about 4 miles an hour? 6 hours of that is pretty much a marathon. Can you really say you ran a marathon if you did it at walking speed?
