It was clearly less accessible though.

Well isn't the rating shown on the splash page for a movie on most streaming services.

by ledamann 7 hours ago

Yeah pretty much...

They were in the papers and on TV

But not right in front the description of the movie when you are about to see it.

It's not like you no longer have the choice NOT to read about a movie on IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes before watching it.

This is such a great way of putting it. I cant remember the last time I looked up a rating prior to seeing a movie, but I can definitely remember doing a sanity check

I treat it like a game. I'll watch a movie and try to guess if it's liked or hated online afterwards.

Right, nobody reviewed movies before the 90s. Nobody at all.

Don't know what rock you're under, but RT is widely accepted as trash on the internet.

As someone who grew up in the 90's, I was pretty aware whether or not a film was well regarded or not, especially once I started reading magazines like Empire

How is wasting time and money on a bad movie "magic"?

I agree with some of the sentiment, but not with your reasoning.

Can always not look at those sites.

I don't know a single person who decides whether or not to watch a movie based on website score.

by ButterscotchSame87 2 hours ago

I need IMDB to figure out where I know that person from and get trivia. It's for geeks like me.

just ignore them lmfao

You don't need to read or watch reviews, it's very easy to avoid. Reviews are best after seeing a movie in any case as it's fun to see others opinions.

When I was a child my parents would read movie reviews in the paper to see if they were worth going to see. They had a big movie guide they kept by the TV for reference so they could look up older movies to see who was in them and if they were any good. People have been listening to what other people's opinions about movies since the dawn of film. We just look it up online now instead of in print.
