+31 Pirating games and movies should be regarded and punished in the same way as any other form of theft in our society. amirite?

I am not getting into the piracy debate. You are confusing the law and law enforcement. If law A made B illegal but, there are no police then law A in a practical matter does not exist.

You cannot steal a piece of virtual media - you can only infringe on its copyright. That's because the item is infinitely reproducible with no impact on the original. If I steal a painting from you, you cease to have it. If I copy a digital painting you made, you still have the digital painting.

The digital product that is been used is produced by people who put money, time and effort on it. Just because it is easy to steal it doesn't justify to steal it. With this mindset we can steal people's services since stealing the service wouldn't be actually stealing something physical

First, most people who provide services provide one service for one benefactor in exchange for one payment. If that benefactor doesn't pay, that time cannot be recuperated. However, someone who produces virtual media does not have such a contract. No one has agreed to pay ahead of time. It's the same amount of labour whether no one wants it or everyone does. Second, most people who produce virtual media don't even make royalties but rather get paid salaries, so it's mostly a moot point. Third, pirating a piece of virtual media doesn't mean you were ever going to purchase it. It's only a lost sale if the person would have actually bought it if piracy wasn't an option. Fourth, a good deal of virtual media cannot even be purchased.

By your logic, I'm stealing someone's art when I copy an image online and say, put it in a meme. So should that also be viewed the same and if so, should you not be allowed to copy or download images?

So, it shouldn't be punished at all?

I'd be more inclined to be mates with someone's who's downloaded Shrek 2 than someone's who's broken in, had sex with my Nan and stole her purse. My Nan would probably disagree.

When the masses deem something unethical and unaffordable, they find ways to circumvent the rules. It's a tale as old as time.

The difference is if I steal some fish, the fish shop then doesnt have that fish to sell. If I pirate something digital, they can still sell that product.

With how easily it is to pirate, we do steal from the people who actually put effort to the product that is been used. With the same mindset I can also hire a lawyer use his service and refuse to pay him since he didn't lose anything.

by Anonymous 1 hour ago

No because the Lawyer very clearly loses there time in that example.

So people who works their asses of to the production of those digital products doesn't?

OKay so just because it seems a bit obligatory. If paying for something, isn't owning it, how can pirating it, be stealing it? But also with companies dumping COMPLETED projects just to get a tax right off there are certain things you can ONLY see if you pirate them.
