i dont mind instrumental music or classics all over the place in public but i would appreciate less pop music and seasonal music

They do it in places of business because it's been proven it does help with customer sales. It's been a tactic ever since it was introduced. And I doubt it makes people less likely to listen to music, that would be counterproductive. Instead, people become less diverse in their listening and only certain artists end up getting popular and making money from industry efforts.

A more unpopular opion: the entire genre of music that it played over intercoms everywhere we go, is, in fact, created for the sole purpose to be played over intercoms everywhere we go. I don't know a single sole who intentionally consumes most of that music. (Though, that might just mean I know cool people or they feel ashamed for their tastes)
