+53 The Olympics are boring! amirite?

by tatum66 1 day ago

Idk you probably just don't enjoy sports in general. The Olympics is definitely more exciting than a random volleyball game or archery match because there are relevant stakes

by Anonymous 1 day ago

If I'm into a sport, I'd rather watch a random match or game that's not Olympic related.

by dedrickhartmann 1 day ago

Why?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Why wouldn't you want to watch the highest level, when the stakes are at their highest?(excluding football)

by jalen84 1 day ago

Gives me "I listened to them before they were cool" vibes

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I'd say this is relatively unpopular. Olympics are amazing!

by Thin_Secret_2742 1 day ago

I just never understand the appeal of some events over others. Basketball I can completely understand watching. The purely race/speed events I find dull as hell and those are often highly viewed. I guess that's the appeal to some, you don't need to know anything about a sport to grasp "whoever is fastest wins".

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yes but who is the fastest?

by Jromaguera 1 day ago

Being the fastest, being able to jump the furthest or highest, or being the strongest is a lot more interesting to a lot of people than a lot of the team sports

by Far-Veterinarian821 1 day ago

Idk, it's fun for some sports. Like we all know who's the best pole vaulter, but how much money is Euplantis gonna steak to the Federation by breaking his record every event. Seeing corporations lose money, that's entertaining !

by Tillman41 1 day ago

In our family some of us like just the action and find everything else boring while others get into the drama and background of the athletes' stories too Like the Olympics as a reality show with global bragging rights and world records

by Careful_Citron6700 1 day ago

I'm not as interested in the summer Olympics as I am the winter ones. Even then, I just sorta kinda pay attention to a handful of sports. This being said, it's a proud time for the athletes and I'm always happy for their accomplishments.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Wow, a married couple wants to watch different things, how will the relationship ever recover

by Anonymous 1 day ago

The USA swim team coming back against France in 2008 was one of the most exhilarating moments in sports history

by mcdermottcamyll 1 day ago

I like to watch the highlights to see impressive athletic ability. Otherwise, I like the team sports during Winter Olympics, especially hockey since I'm a big hockey fan.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I mean I kind of get not generally liking watching sport (I also don't). But there are way too many different events to dislike all of them. From traditional sports like football, rugby, tennis and basketball. Combat sports like judo, boxing and taekwondo. To feats of strength like weightlifting, cycling and the various sprints. To the expressive forms like dancing, skateboarding and synchronised swimming. And forgetting all of the above how can you not enjoy kayak cross, full contact white water kayaking through obstacles , just full on excitement.

by ExpensiveBag4308 1 day ago

I have a fear of drowning and the water sports would trigger a panic attack.

by tatum66 1 day ago

Fair enough on the kayak, but my broader point of there being so much breadth I truly believe there is an event for everyone. Whether or not it has good coverage is a different question though.

by ExpensiveBag4308 1 day ago

Haven't watched them in years.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

The major sports leagues aren't suspending their seasons, so you are watching the minor leagues. It feels like a college matchup in the more minor sports. The biking is usually done in places that show off the countryside so that's neat. I'm one of those weird people who don't want to sit at home watching sports when it's nice outside in the middle of summer.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

No, you can't throw the entire thing in one box. Many of the events may be boring but not the whole thing. In the summer the sprinting, gymnastics and swimming are awesome. In the winter, snowboarding and speed skating and such are awesome (and everyone's favorite curling).

by Anonymous 1 day ago

The winter ones are actually more exciting than the summer ones, so at least there's that.

by YoghurtTough4684 1 day ago

I find them sort of interesting, I think it's nice seeing the fruition of people's effort and training. Their feats are impressive. That being said, I am just not a competitive person outside of like videogames I guess. Idk, I just can't really see the thrill in pitting different bodies of different capabilities against each other. There isn't really a point in comparison to me. I won't be a dick about it, of course. I'm not gonna be one of those "oMg ArE yOu EnJoYiNg YoUr SpOrTsBaLl GaMe ☝️🤓" types.

by wizaconnie 1 day ago

The programming is super boring, but the events themselves are awesome! There's just so much fluff for really no reason aside from ad revenue. They should be ad free on PBS

by ProfessorThin 1 day ago

It totally depends on the event. I'd happily watch Olympic tennis/football/golf/boxing. 100m is OK. Long distance running is dire. As is swimming and the "floor" gymnastics. Equine dressage is also terrible.

by Florencesteuber 1 day ago

I can watch the winter olympics from beginning to end and be entertained, especially since hockey ends on the last day. Summer Olympics I tune out after week 1. I just don't love track that much to sit through week 2.

by Reillyrogahn 1 day ago

You're not alone!

by Grouchy-Age 1 day ago

Quite a few of my hobbies are Olympic sports and get I don't enjoy watching anyone else do any of that for longer than a few minutes. I pretty much only catch the Olympics if I'm somewhere that has it on, like a bar or hotel lounge.

by Deckowkari 1 day ago

As if your mother, your husband can like a different thing comparing with you, and it's ok?

by josephine72 1 day ago

I don't mind that they like it, I just don't want to watch it, but I like spending time with them.

by tatum66 1 day ago

"Its boring and I couldn't care less but I want my country to win"

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Nothing beats the Grand Slams Basically all the Olympic sports that have a separate prestigious and popular world tournament are inferior to that tournament. Tennis has several better tournaments, Soccer has the World Cup, basketball has the NBA championship (I know it's not global but the best from around the globe play for the NBA), hockey has Stanley cup, biking Tour De France (and probably others), Golf has the Majors. I guess basically any popular spectator sport. Olympic swimming is great, for example, because nobody otherwise watched swimming. I'd get bored of most of these sports if I watched them more than every 4 years. But I do love seeing them in the Olympics.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Yes, and the way it's being filmed these days makes tracks mouthwatering

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I ignore them, as I fail to understand the purpose other than money these days

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Same here! I don't remember the last time I watched any Olympic events.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

The worst thing about the Olympics is not getting to watch what you want. They make it so complicated.

by Financial_Mistake 1 day ago

It's interesting to me that I know lots of people who don't care about sports at all but love the Olympics. These people love the opening games, medal counts, figure skating, all the pomp and PR videos hyping up the different athletes. I find all that stuff really tedious and would just rather watch the events.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

So you just don't like sports? Because about every type of sport is represented in the Olympics. Sure some are boring to watch but others are exhilarating like close swimming races, soccer matches, downhill skiing, track and field, etc.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I like sports, but I don't need to watch everyone in the world.

by tatum66 1 day ago

Good job it's not mandatory to watch them!

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Try going to an event in person. It's even worse. It feels like a speed audition, except you have to go through 10,000+ athletes across 300+ events, all crammed into two weeks.

by Ok_Month9545 1 day ago

Lets really stir the pot. What events ARE NOT boring in your mind?

by Anonymous 1 day ago

I like figure skating but that's about it.

by tatum66 1 day ago

Way better than someone streaming a game. The "entertainment" of some people

by baumbachyasmine 1 day ago

Turn off your TV and go outside.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

So coverage makes all the difference. Im from the UK so I have very fond memories of the 2012 London Olympics (branding and mascots notwithstanding). We had a broad comprehensive coverage of the events and it was easy to catch whatever you were looking for. Fast forward to the Paris Olympics and options were severely limited and I ultimately did decide to miss a lot of events just due the distribution was handled.

by ExpensiveBag4308 1 day ago

I absolutely agree. Every two years, the Olympics plague the TV screen during the summer or winter, where I, at the behest of my family, watch athletes I don't know compete in sports I don't care for. I respect the athletes for the time and effort they put into being considered for the Olympics, I just don't care about the Olympics in of itself. Also, I do not care for the fact that the majority of athletes have to come as a representative of their home country. Sure, each country should only send for their best, but does that mean that they have to be national representatives? Take the Tour De France for example. Although nationality does come up from time to time, it's never as prevalent as it is in the Olympics. Frankly, you'd think that after 100 years of conflicts and major screw-ups caused by nationalistic and "patriotic" fervor, the Olympics, an event that tries to bring the world together, would steer away from advertising patriotism and nationalism to the masses, but here we are.

by Anonymous 1 day ago

Except women's gymnastics in summer and figure skating in winter

by Main-Bandicoot 1 day ago

IDGAF about the results, I just like watching the performances. 🤷🏻‍♂️

by Main-Bandicoot 23 hours ago

There are very few Olympic sports I like keeping up with. Outside of that, I agree with you OP. I think blind nationalism plays a big role in keeping the Olympics afloat.

by dedrickhartmann 23 hours ago

I like figure skating, but that's about it.

by tatum66 23 hours ago

The Winter Games are way better.

by Large-Prize 23 hours ago

Olympic Ice Hockey with NHL players is the best ice hockey ever. USA v Russia. Sweden Canada. All those talented players and they actually check and play defense? Heaven for hockey fans.

by Anonymous 22 hours ago

Yes. Except curling.

by Anonymous 22 hours ago

The Olympics are an excuse for people to pretend to care about sports that no one cares about for 3.75 years at a time. Swimming? Track and field? Curling? Get real. The only Olympic sports anyone actually cares about are the ones that are televised regularly.
