+21 An action scene followed by "X months earlier" is the worst narrative device in TV and film, amirite?

In Media Res can be used incredibly well but most of the time, it isn't. Particularly in the streaming era. The worst for me is how often streaming series have really engaging first episodes that get you right in the heat of things and get the plot going fast then they end the first episode with an exciting cliffhanger just to have the second episode be all flashback to set everything up. It's lazy and it kills all momentum.

What about Goodfellas

Or Breaking Bad.

I quit watching Breaking Bad within the first 10 minutes because I was pissed when I saw it use this plot device. It wasn't until many years later, and more than a few friends raving about it, that I came back and realized what a great series it is.
