Too big gap for what? Most games have ranking systems for exactly this reason.

by Anonymous 16 hours ago

You haven't explained why, though. My opinion is quite the opposite: for Single Player or coop, the difficulty is set by the game. If the skill ceiling is so high that even the highest difficulty is trivial for good players, then the game itself is trivial and getting better at the game is unnecessary. The player should be limited in mechanical options so that a human player needs to get as close to.optimal play - the ceiling- as possible, so that the game is still fun and challenging. For multilayer games though, the difficulty is set by the opposing players. A limited skill ceiling means high-level players will have skill levels so close together and so close to optimal play, that each game is basically a coinflip. However, if the sky is the limit, then there are still reasonable skill differences possible even at the highest level of play. Also, getting better at the game remains fun always, as there will always be opponents better than you or, if you're the best, who are trying their darndest to overtake you.

I dont think theres anything wrong with a singleplayer game being trivialized on its hardest setting because the player got that good. That doesnt mean getting better is unnecessary, it can still be incredibly hard for players who haven't gotten really good

This is literally a skill issue, you want to ban being good at a game ?

by Noemyjast 15 hours ago

You shouldn't be able to accurately fire a light machine gun while sliding down a staircase while also throwing grenades every half second. just because your fingers can press the keys quickly enough doesnt mean the game should allow it. That's literally what he's saying though. "Just because you're good enough to do this ridiculous thing doesn't mean the game should allow it because I can't do it"

by Noemyjast 15 hours ago

keyboards make it so you are a more effective strafer banned in some competitive games.

by Low_Commission 15 hours ago

Most multiplayer games have 3rd party programs banned. You can argue they should be better at enforcing it, but refusing to have mechanics that would be easily exploitable by non humans is a silly take.

by Creminhans 14 hours ago

There are many games with massively high borderline limitless skill ceilings without such a glitch. The examplr you gave honestly means nothing other than that game is broken.

by Anonymous 14 hours ago

This is one of the few cases where "Git Gud" is a perfectly legitimate answer. Just cause some people suck, doesnt mean others should be limited, at most its a matchmaking issue.

Play arma lol

by christina26 13 hours ago

Skill issue. I'm almost 50 and still don't suck at video games with my old man eyes and reaction time. Maybe pvp games ain't for you.

by gregoria89 13 hours ago

It really depends on the game. For anyone who isn't a teenager, our reflexes begin to drop. If they want the test of us to play those games we need to be able to compete. If some 12 year old kid can blast through the door and dome all of us in 0.5 seconds, we're going to just play other games. The game will become a twitch shooter for kids and guys in their early 20s. If you want the rest of us to play, you've got to make a game that relies more on tactical thinking and map knowledge while minimizing those other elements.

by jordanewunsch 13 hours ago

That or just have skill based matches. That way you get to fight against others on more equal ground

by heidenreichmekh 13 hours ago

Why? If there is a ceiling that makes it so any player can only reach that level, then how is it about skill anymore? That's like saying a runner shouldn't be allowed to run faster than "X". There are skill based matches, so high level players play with high level players. I don't see why there should be a limit to how good players are allowed to be, I get if it's a game breaking bug, that is unfair for others, as that is not skill based, but because someone is able to move fast, that is just a skill, so that is valid.

by heidenreichmekh 13 hours ago

The opposite should be the ideal scenario in my opinion. Getting better is what makes pvp fun. If the game has a ceiling then there is no point playing this game. A good player should be able to win a bad player 100%.

by Anonymous 12 hours ago

I remember back in the day when skill based MM was less common, there'd always be a super skilled player in your lobby, but if the game is balanced carefully even the most skilled player can get caught off guard and be killed by a noob. I like that kind of game.

by judymurazik 12 hours ago

So you're proposing banning chess?

by Anonymous 12 hours ago

Chess has a clear skill ceiling though, except for having fast hands in a short time control the rest of the game is pretty limited.

by judymurazik 11 hours ago

Are you saying skill is only mechanical skill?

by Anonymous 11 hours ago

Congratz, a truly ridiculous take

by Anonymous 11 hours ago

Wait... You think skill in chess is about how fast someone moves the pieces?

by Anonymous 11 hours ago

Thats not what i mean. Im saying that thats pretty much the only thing in chess where there is almost no limit as to how high your skill can reach. The limit in terms of strategic skill is pretty well known. Two perfect players would always draw. There would be no improvement possible beyond that. Playing faster over the board is only limited by the human body though.

by judymurazik 10 hours ago

Perfect play = reasonable skill ceiling lol

by Merleoreilly 10 hours ago

What? You realize "perfect play" has still not been achieved even by computers. Also to your original point the gap between low skill chess players and high skill players is enormously vast.

by Anonymous 10 hours ago

The difference is: if i play an hour long game against magnus carlsen, surely he will win overall, but during the game, i will almost certainly be able to grab a piece here and there. If i were to play a pvp shooter against a pro for 1 hour, there is a reasonable chance i would literally not be able to hit them a single time. Even though i am much better at shooters than i am at chess.

by judymurazik 10 hours ago

'I'm bad at this therefore everyone else must be as bad as me or it's not fair'' Participation trophy ass take.

by Anonymous 9 hours ago

Really? Would something like Mario Kart be as fun if everyone was sandbagging instead of, you know, racing?

by Ordinary_Aside 9 hours ago

Depends on the game. I kind of get where you are coming from, but it should be totally dependend on the game.

by Bruenbeverly 9 hours ago

Play autochess multiplayer games, instead of arcade FPS

by Anonymous 9 hours ago

It just sounds to me like you shouldn't play pvp games tbh. I had this same realization a decade ago and haven't touched one since

by Anonymous 8 hours ago

I disagree. The game needs to have reasonable structure such that there is some inherent limit in certain aspects, but for others the sky should be the limit. There's a reason games like CS, Val, or Apex all limit movement in speed caps, acceleration ramp, or implement air braking. At the same time your gun aims as fast as you do, there's no delay to your inputs to pull the trigger or jump, it just happens as you press it. I think that these sorts of game design decisions allow the developers to choose what is a competitive aspect of the game. The idea that no multiplayer game should have limitless mechanics, is like saying there should be built in RNG in kicking a soccer ball, or a kick force limit on the soccer ball. As others have said "get good".

skill issue bro

by Low_Commission 7 hours ago

I hope game devs don't listen to people like you. Dumbing a game down is never good for competition.
