+42 Giving away a base ball to a kid at a baseball game is unnecessary, amirite?

by One_Poetry 9 hours ago

That's what someone like OP can't understand. Most people would get a lot more value from making a kid's day than from having some random ball sitting on a shelf in their house. Normal people take pleasure in making others happy. OP doesn't understand that.

I don't see where OP doesn't understand that. It appears to me that OP is saying if you catch a ball, you have no obligation to give it away to some random kid who happens to be nearby, and if you decline to do so people shouldn't shame you for it.

by Dependent_Deer 8 hours ago

The no obligation part is why it's wholesome. You owe nothing to that kid, but still giving it away is what makes that moment special.

Of course no one has an obligation to give it to a child, some people would just prefer to make a child happy over keeping a baseball with zero value. Kids smiles are nice to see

No legal obligation, so you should not be jailed or fined. You for sure have a social obligation, the punishment for failing social obligations is shame. You now are perfectly aware of your social obligation. If you break it, you will be shamed and you will deserve it.

I would appreciate it if you didn't refer, essentially, to OP as "abnormal". You're being unkind here, imo, even if you don't realize it.

You are just flat ass completely wrong here

by Far-Jello 7 hours ago

Nah, he right.

by Clear-Membership9863 7 hours ago

Ohh thank you for chiming in, but I'm actually right. Good effort though.

by Anonymous 6 hours ago

You are not

by Far-Jello 6 hours ago

How?

by Individual_Hawk_2196 6 hours ago

It isn't a reward. It's just a souvenir at best.

by Individual_Hawk_2196 5 hours ago

Thats why it isn't a reward, but a gesture of kindness.

by Anonymous 5 hours ago

You're either young, incredibly selfish, or sociopathic if you disagree.

by Anonymous 5 hours ago

Nope, you're also very wrong

by Far-Jello 5 hours ago

Nah, if you've reached adulthood and you're still a taker instead of a giver, you have issues. Best of luck

by Anonymous 5 hours ago

It's only a nice gesture if you would also look down on a woman that doesn't give the ball up.

by yostorion 4 hours ago

It's been made fairly obvious here in the states recently that people will absolutely look down on a woman who does the same thing lol

by Anonymous 4 hours ago

I wouldn't look down on any one who chose not to give the ball away, it's a choice. But people that do give it to a child, make that child's day

by Anonymous 4 hours ago

It's only a nice gesture if they would look down on an imaginary woman in a hypothetical situation?

by Anonymous 4 hours ago

Why? Its her ball, if she doesn't want to give it away then that is fine. As long as they are not taking it from someone else, I don't see the issue.

by Anonymous 3 hours ago

Sure it's not necessary, but I prefer a society where people sometimes go out of their way to hopefully make a positive impact on a kid

by Anonymous 3 hours ago

But it was a dream when you were a child. As I get older, I don't care at all about potentially catching a ball. Hell, I haven't brought a glove with me in almost 20 years. If I did catch the ball, it would be a great experience, but I also don't need to keep the ball to remind myself that I caught it

by Anonymous 3 hours ago

Not everyone is the same. I'm thinking of my fiance. He became a baseball fan is his 20s. He would love to have a ball. I don't think he'd keep it because he's feel guilty. But it doesn't change that he would want it. Again, if an adult wants to give a ball to a kid that's awesome! But I don't think there's anything wrong with the opposite.

by ParsnipShoddy4558 3 hours ago

And what exactly would your finance do with the ball once he got home. Probably toss it in a drawer and forget about it

by Anonymous 3 hours ago

Agreed 100%. That moment for that kid means more then a baseball. Those kids are litterally our future.

by ocie07 2 hours ago

Agreed, they'll learn soon enough that the world is not very merciful- they'll never run out of examples - but examples of people who show sympathy are important to a kid - and pretty exceptional.

by Anonymous 2 hours ago

Correct. Not a necessary event for the process of the sport game.

by Anonymous 2 hours ago

It's definitely unnecessary, but it's certainly a nice thing to do

by Anonymous 2 hours ago

100% this. Unless it was some record breaking hit, which often the stadium tries to even get back from you, it's going to improve some child's life more than mine.

by Anonymous 1 hour ago

Dude is upset that a kid somewhere got a baseball that he couldn't get

by Langworthzita 1 hour ago

This isn't an unpopular opinion. Adults catch balls all the time and keep them. Nothing wrong with that.

by Anonymous 1 hour ago

Doing any good deed is rarely strictly necessary. That's not why people do them.

by stephaniejerde 1 hour ago

I completely agree. And honestly I dont believe in rewarding children simply for being children.

Although I will steal candy from everyone, it is certainly simpler to take it from babies.
