The problem is forced small talk. Most people make some form of small talk with their friends/family, but they don't consider it small talk since it's (usually) natural and wanted. But I don't want to talk about the weather or my day with a stranger, and shouldn't be expected to.

"I don't actually want to discuss the cosmos and the state of the world" This is over and over that weird assumption that "small talk" means "talking about things that are not deep" While it means rather "not sure what to say to someone I barely know and now it feels awkward" If your love for a small talk is a response to all people who hate it, you really need to follow THEIR definition. Otherwise you love something different from what they hate. Also not really unpopular. It' here regularly and always gets a lot of support.

I only dislike it when I'm at a place like a wedding and ten people who seem really disinterested in talking to me ask me the same questions. I generally love it with strangers but sometimes it feels almost like the person is mad at you lol
