Cubicle office is better than open office, amirite?
by Existing-Interest5 hours ago
I don't think this is unpopular with anyone other than the people who advocated for open offices and the concept of desk hoteling. People like their personal space and open offices are noisy and unnerving. There's no point in them. If I really wanted to socialize with the people around me more...I'd do it. This effort to force me to do that is stupid.

And how am I supposed to do my shopping and browse non-work related things in an open office with Sharon constantly peering over my shoulder??

I think you'll find that most office workers actually hate the open design and while cubicles aren't fantastic they are a much better alternative. My organization is going through space issues where they are trying to realign people and this has come up very frequently in conversation with coworkers and so far not a single person who has to work in the "open space" has said they prefer that to cubes.

As someone who went from quad-style cubicle to WFH (Covid) to open office - YES GIVE ME BACK MY OWN SPACE. Just somewhere to put a pair of shoes and a picture of my kids. A desk drawer to put some documents and work-related things. Now it's like I have to pack my entire work life into my backpack to take everywhere.

they give you good hiding opportunities if a dodgy looking agent comes searching for you

Is anybody else old enough to remember actual offices…with doors? And not just for the bigwigs.

Even worse is open office + flex seating.

Who the hell likes an open office?

Clippy (But seriously, managers like them, because they take less spell — aka less money — and they make it easier for managers to micromanage.)

Is this unpopular? Every time I hear about open office concepts, it's entirely how much people hate them. There's no privacy or quiet. I know the cubicle sucks, but it's a more tolerable suck.

I don't think this is unpopular

I would hate an open office

This isn't unpopular at all. Full cubicles like the one you have may not be as good as an office, but they're way better than any sort of open plan.

I think very few prefer open office spaces. Seems those are often advocated for by people who have their own dedicated office.

WFH is even better

This is obvious from an employee standpoint. And also supports why management prefers an open office layout

I like to rest my eyes and pick my nose with at least some privacy. Thanks.

My last job had an open office layout, although I sat at the front desk so technically I had my own cubicle but it wasn't the most private of course. I definitely prefer cubicles for some privacy.

People who like open office are weird extroverts and i want them to stay away from me. Give me my four tiny walls so i can keep to myself.
