i don‘t think people actually think gatekeeping is evil. it‘s just a bit petty, especially when someone is gatekeeping where they got their jeans from. Annoying, not evil

this just depends on context. It's possible to gatekeep in such a way that you are kind of a bad person. Especially if you do it by bullying people. It just depends. I don't think declining to talk to someone is even gatekeeping necessarily.
