That would immediately minimize the pool of people available for jury duty and make the justice system take even longer than it already does.

I find the whole jury system a bit strange tbh. But then in my country we don't have any.

What does your country do?
by Anonymous2 days ago
We just have a judge or a panel of judges.

I mean this is certainly an unpopular opinion - I'll give you that!

In the UK, a recent suggestion by an eminent ex-judge was to get rid of all jury trials and just have the judge function as the jury as well for a lot of trials. It would allow the UK's current backlog to clear much more quickly. Maybe same in the USA

It is the very essence of a jury system to make justice work around the judgement of "non qualified people". and The idea is not to just ask random people for their opinion on a case, it's to explain everything to them in depth in regard to the case and then ask for their opinion. If the prosecutor cannot convince a group of ordinary people that the person is guilty, even if they tried their best with all their knowledge and qualification to convince them, then his case is bad and the opinion of the jury is a good representation of this. The jury system is good because it requires the prosecution to be extremely convincing, and also because it involves the people in the legal system, which is a key aspect of democracy.

As someone who has served on 4 juries and twice as a foreman and. I agree to this .. Attorneys like me for some damn reason just because I have a degree does not make me a good juror...

It would streamline the entire judicial system Uh... how exactly would severely limiting the pool of potential jurors streamline anything?

You wouldn't have to explain the law to a bunch of idiots. They'd already know.

I went to jury duty recently and noticed that they didn't choose a single person who came across as particularly sharp.
