I've incorporated my trying hardness into my normal sense of comedy so it comes off as natural. And y'know, my friends think I'm one of the funniest people ever. Same with people I hardly know who overhear my jokes. I think you're mixing up trying too hard with having a poor joke in the first place and just rolling with it.
