Dances with Wolves was more realistic. Pocahontas was more coherent. Fern Gully was similar: colorful, modern and fanciful. The writing and visuals of Avatar is more inline with cartoons than movies. The action is mature. They deserved a few awards under the animated classification but as far as mature live action films go this is not even close.

SPOILER!!! Humans a highly intelligent species travels across great expanses of space to collect materials necessary to extend and support the species. The movie alludes to mining elsewhere in the galaxy where humans find what they need but Pandora has the largest cache of "unobtainum". Humans are weaker than the native species of Pandora, yet more intelligent and diligent species that innovated methods to overcome the challenges. These achievements included: Life sustaining equipment and procedures for a planet which has a toxic atmosphere. Advance weaponry that can overcome any life form on Pandora. Innovative methods for building relations and embassy with other intelligent species. The core component was the embassy. Humans bent over backwards to build relations with the Na'vi. However the Na'vi constantly fought. The plot unfolded an excuse for a few humans to defect and the fumbling self interested ambassadors led Pandora to total war.

One other note. I don't find it ideal or romantic to rub my genitals on trees and sexually enslave animals. I can't understand how the Na'vi can be portrayed in a positive light understanding that they use their genitals as a tool for domination.
