The fact that he used his "great" leadership for evil over-rides him being a great leader, because usually using great in that context means he did something good which he most certainly did not do.

Really? Because pretty much ALL of histories greatest leaders have lead their troops to do terrible things, plundering, raping and mass murdering lands they occupy, and don't think racism or killing people because of beliefs is such a new thing either.

I guess the difference is all those events happened long enough for people to stop caring about them emotionally, so we can objectively look at what they accomplished for their own land and call them great, despite the horrible things they've done.
