Where I go now, the professors do that, if you have a certain grade, you don't have to take the final.
And my math teacher drops the lowest test grade, which means if you are satisfied with your overall grade, you can skip out on the final, and since that would be the lowest grade, it's dropped and does not affect the final grade. I loved him. I'm taking him again this semester!
