+12Help By: omegaopinions March 27, 2018 As most people know, depression a mental illness that is caused by a number of things. One thing that causes depression, as Hellen Farrell from TED-ED states, “The abnormal transmission or depletion of certain neurotransmitters.” Today, I will be arguing to why people with depression shouldn’t think it’ll go away without help from doctors or medications because depression is harmful both mentally and physically, and overpopulated. Physically, depression can be harmful because people may commit suicide. As Ann Pietrangelo from Healthline says, “350 million: number of people people worldwide who suffer from depression” This number is quite large, and suicide is not an uncommon thing. People may also affect their body in ways like changes in appetite. Mentally, people will have symptoms that make them feel certain ways. Some symptoms that support this are feeling worthless or guilty, or low mood. Now, some people out there say “Depression isn’t real!”. To those people, i’d like you to keep in mind that some people with depression may look fine, but are actually suffering from this ever-growing illness. Too many people have depression. As said earlier, 350 million people worldwide have depression. Though this number may seem small compared to the 7 billion people on this earth, as Hellen Farrell states, ”According to the National Institute of Mental Health, it takes the average person suffering with a mental illness over 10 years to ask for help,” With the 3 million people who get depression each year in the U.S alone, it won’t take long before more and more people get depression. Lots of people think they can treat depression by themselves, and they’ll be “fine” and “can handle themselves.” Now, I don’t want to make those people feel worse, but depression isn’t something you can just get over. Just like you can’t get over a broken leg, or a dislocated shoulder. You need help to treat those things, and there are lots of people who can help. It is important to treat depression, and there are natural treatments such as these from Morgan Griffin from WebMD, “...Set goals...Eat Healthy...Try to Have Fun.” That’s all for today. Hopefully, this speech has educated you on the effects of depression. And to those who have depression, I hope that now you know what you’re facing, you can help yourself make the right choice. You now know why people with depression shouldn’t think it’s treatable with help from others or medications because it is harmful both mentally and physically, and is overpopulated. Thank you for listening to me.
+6Hello everyone, I hope that whoever is reading this is enjoying their day or night. In this post I am going to review some of the benefits of legalizing marijuana. I do not intend to change your minds about what you already believe about marijuana, but I do want to open your eyes and hope that you see that marijuana has some potential to be beneficial when applied correctly. http:onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/phar.1187/full “The Pharmacologic and Clinical Effects of Medical Cannabis” above talks about the effects of medicinal marijuana. In the abstract it talks about several pharmaceuticals, medicines that have been derived from cannabis and how they are used not to cure diseases, but to help people deal with the pain and nausea that comes from them. This application is used with people who are typically going through chemotherapy. There are other applications in people with multiple sclerosis. https:www.cancer.org/treatment/treatments-and-side-effects/treatment-types/chemotherapy/chemotherapy-side-effects.html From “Chemotherapy Side effects” above it talks about the side effects of cancer. There are three main side effects of chemotherapy. The first side effect is the damaging of blood-forming cells in bone marrow. The second is damage to hair follicles. Finally, damage to cells in the mouth, digestive tract, and reproductive system. The last symptoms mention are what cause the patient to have so much pain. The patients typically can’t eat solid foods so they eat softer items like apple sauce and oatmeal, and one of the side effects of marijuana is an increase in appetite. This is one reason for the backing of medicinal marijuana legalization in the United States. These people suffer every day from a disease that has many forms, and some of those forms are incurable. I’m not saying that there aren’t alternatives to marijuana. There are definitely other ways to go about dealing with appetite and nausea. The doctor might prescribe other drugs, but these drugs vary in their effectiveness. This is due to everyone having different bodies. This causes some people to take multiple drugs, and they might not find a drug that works for them. “These can be prescribed for you to take before, during, and/or after chemotherapy. As you can see there are many different medications that your doctor can prescribe to control these symptoms. It may take trying a couple different medications before finding the right match for you.” This is a quote from http:chemocare.com/chemotherapy/side-effects/nausea-vomiting-chemotherapy.aspx titled “Nausea, Vomiting & Chemotherapy.” The reason I put this quote into this argument is because it helps to prove that drugs have different effects on different people and everyone is different. As I mentioned earlier there is also another use for medicinal marijuana. That use is for people dealing with Multiple sclerosis. Multiple Sclerosis is a disease that attacks the brain and spinal cord, central nervous system. According to “Mayo Clinic” the immune system attacks a protective sheath that covers nerve fibers and causes communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body. This disease cause the nerves to deteriorate or become permanently damaged. According to “The Therapeutic Potential of Cannabinoids for Movement Disorders” it states that oral cannabis extract is effective in treating multiple sclerosis related spasticity and central pain or painful spasms. This helps because it does show that marijuana can be useful to treat pain, but in the article, if you take the time to read most of it, it does mention that marijuana has been tested on other diseases to see the potential benefits, but the results have come back with little correlation. I mention this because I do not view marijuana as a cure. I view it as a drug that has potential to relieve pain and suffering. https:www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/multiple-sclerosis/symptoms-causes/syc-20350269 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4357541/ I would like to thank everyone that has taken the time to read my opinion. I hope that you have seen some of the potential benefits of marijuana and have opened your eyes to something that has potential to help people.
