If someone gets laid off or faces a random emergency they should be able to take care of it with health insurance or savings while unemployed. If they didn't save then tough luck. They failed at life it's not my problem. If they had kids when they weren't financially capable or responsible then they deserve to have their kids taken from them
Well excuse us for not spending the time and money to get a degree in philosophy so we can discuss it. I can't say much for how this site has changed from what it once was, but don't call people wannabe philosophers just because they want to discuss life and the universe.
I doubt most of the active users are "want to be philosophers." Even if they are, that's not so bad.
Definition of philosopher (according to dictionary.com):
1. a person who offers views or theories on profound questions in ethics, metaphysics, logic, and other related fields.
2. a person who establishes the central ideas of some movement
3. a person who regulates his or her life, actions, judgments, utterances, etc., by the light of philosophy or reason.
4. a person who is rationally or sensibly calm, especially under trying circumstances.
The synonyms of the word "philosopher" are "deep thinker," and, "wise person." What's wrong with thinking? What's wrong with offering " views or theories on profound questions?"

compared to other developed nations
America has pretty low taxes
yet people still complain
if charities were enough
your idea would work
if someone gets laid off or faces a random emergency
they might not have to be homeless and have their kids starve since there are programs that help
boy are we people selfish
as if helping someone with their health and well being is just so horrible
The point still stands that charity cases should get their assistance from charities, not tax dollars.
Nothing. What is wrong is obligating someone to help another.
Want me to assist you in this time of frustration?
