ok, I am going to post an actual equation to help you understand. Let's say the two friends started 4 meters apart, and each took a 1 meter step towards the other. Then for their next step, they each went 1/2 meters towards each other. Continuing this pattern you have:

D=4(1/2)x
where x is the number of steps taken and D is the distance between the friends. Solving for D=0, you end up with log_0.5(0)=x, which is undefined.
Therefore, the distance between the two friends can never be equal so long as their is a common ratio between the two steps that is less than 1. I believe that this is the situation the OP was speaking of, however, if you only went on the assumption that each step is less than the preceding one, then it would be possible to reach zero (i.e. 1-.75-.25=0.)
